pocky
Liz, June, Beth, and I set out from Pavillion Beach and saw the first racers coming through up close shortly after crossing the channel. First boats in were double crew shells and some singles, and then the paddleboarders. Then outriggers, and the first kayakers came through not too long after. We were sad to see that NewYorkOutrigger.org beat the pants off of BostonOutrigger.com... We went from the Greasy Pole to Brace Cove and back with a detour at Star Island to go swimming. Results are at http://www.blackburnchallenge.com/Blackbur...e2010Timing.xls I found some excellent photos at Jay Albert's site at http://capeannimages.blogspot.com/2010/07/...-challenge.html , and I posted some personal photos from our trip at http://www.nspn.org/forum/index.php?autoco...um&album=80 . I believe Liz mentioned that someone from NSPN was taking photos from shore with a good long tele lens -- can you post them too?
spider
I'm thinking there is more than one Pavillion Beach or you folks did a heck of a long paddle? (We left from Pavillion Beach, Sunday then along Cranes & Coffins down to Wingaersheek & the mouth of the Annisquam) Either way nice pictures and nice days to be on the water. Hi Spider, I know it's confusing, but there's a Pavilion Beach on Gloucester Harbor, right by the infamous Greasy Pole. A great launching area if you want the area or head south towards Magnolia and Manchester-by-the-Sea. Deb M
lhunt
I found some more pictures on Picasa - this one shows the starting line. It looks to me like the SKs ("Sea Kayaks") have just started, the FSKs ("Fast Sea Kayaks" - my class) are starting to line up, and some HPKs ("High Performance Kayaks") are waiting in the wings. The heats start about 5 minutes apart. There is a boat to the right (off the screen) that calls the roll and starts the heat. Good job by CARC! Oh, and this is how Pavilion Beach looks when you finally get there for beer, lunch, and a massage. (photo from last year). Lisa
Beth M
What a fun trip! Liz timed the trip so that we were paddling out as the racers were coming in. It was a kick to see the racers, with their variety of vessels and techniques. We stopped for lunch near Brace Rock (Liz pointed out that this is only possible when the ocean is reasonably calm) We walked through the slippery seaweed to get to the top of Brace Rock (you can see us there in the group photo that "pocky" posted). Note: we stopped on Ten Pound Island, (not Star Island). Thanks to Liz for leading this. It was a great experience. For those of you who missed out, the Blackburn Challenge is an annual event, so perhaps we can do a similar event next year.
