With some encouragement from Gerry, we launched out of Pierce in 9 degree temperature and a slight wind. The snow was coming down fairly steady as we paddled an outgoing tide to the breakwater of Little Harbor to assess conditions. Listening to the National Weather Service on the VHF, winds were reported at 26kts, gusting to 38 kts. The swell was large but spaced at 9-10 secs and looked OK. However, the large breakers exploding on the rocks a short distance in front of us convinced us easily that today was not the day to be playing there. We opted to paddle back inside and headed up Sagamore Creek, protected from the wind but not the cold! In Sagamore Creek we were treated to the sight of a very large bald eagle as it flew in search of its next meal. After navigating the narrow channel of Sagamore at low tide, we headed back to Pierce Island against a very stiff headwind and driving snow. Arriving safely back, we helped each other load boats and headed off to the warmth of home.
