boatload
[link:URL]http://www.islandertalk.com/photos/ice311/ Check out the picture gallery from a most spectacular paddle with the breaking up ice. Thousand Islands region of the St. Lawrence River. One stunning day, several stunning photos taken by my good buddy. Sat. March 11, 2006 We put on to the river at Grass Point State Park, near Clayton New York and paddled NWN for a few slow leisurely miles. While we got out at Rock Island to walk around, we found the ice had shifted and we needed to wait for it to float past before we could continue our paddle. Watching and listening to the river rid herself of the ice amazing. It clicks it rings, it grinds, it growls, it scrapes, it is mesmerizing. Grass Point is about a mile up river (SE) from the Thousand Island Bridge. Take rt 81 north all the way north, almost to the Canadian Border till you get to "last exit before toll" and you will be on the American side of the river. The air was almost 50, and I didn't touch the water for too long. With the dry suit, and one layer of fleece, we were plenty comfortable. Brian Nystrom
It looks like you had fun, too. BTW, didn't anyone tell you guys that Greenland paddles are required equipment for any trips involving ice? ;-)
markstephens
Um, yeah Brian, those would be CARBON greenland paddles, right? I've seen what ice can do to a toothpick. Oh, that's right - it was YOUR toothpick!
Brian Nystrom
Since putting oak edges on the blades, it's taken a beating and come through with no damage. People who paddle in ice all the time - like Greenlanders - know this. I had to learn by trial and error. ;-)
