Guest guest
Sunday, April 28 was the Race on the Charles: 1400 paddlers, and some 400 boats from pro canoes, racing kayaks to outrigger canoes, to our own beloved recreational kayaks. Several types of races, from 24 mile relay races to a 6 mile loop, to a 9 mile with 3 portages, to a 19 miler with 6 portages. This year had the special treat of 50 degree weather with heavy rain and 20 mph wind. Consider it a workshop on hypothermia, and there is one section of swift water that can let you enjoy those newly acquired bracing skills-the spectators actually boo if you don't capsize! If climbing up slippery river banks with your 60 pound kayak on your shoulder sounds like fun, and you'd like to be part of a real New England Kayak tradition, sign up for next years race. The proceeds are used to help clean up the Charles, with the goal of making safe for swimming within a few years.
eneumeier
Congratulations on doing it in those conditions. I had planned on being a spectator, but passed on even that part. Liz N.
