  1. I appreciate the reminder as I'll be getting in a "new to me" Qcc700X in a couple weeks.

Carl did teach us the pull on the sides for personal wet exit or when your hand of God fails for your buddy. (Your unconscious buddy will float out of the boat.) However, never tried with neo gloves.

  2. Barb, for future trips consider 2 of the smaller 4 liter dromedary bags. Easier to handle and one fits in your day hatch with room to spare and one under your legs in the cockpit. Yes Gary is on the camel side but 14 liters of spare water for 3 days seems a bit much unless you are in Florida paddling 18 hours/day in a race in the summer. I think the math is one liter equals approx 2.2 pounds

  3. Anything left outside will be covered in a heavy sea dew. Best to try to get dry suit interior as dry as possible before sunset and then stow under cover. I remember the first time I saw Peter use a jet boil.... a miracle if you need that cup of joe asap in the morning. Also don't forget the campfire for cooking hot dogs, corn, etc that do well in foil. Thank you Gary for the shoe specifics; always wondered what those were. Life is also more pleasant with Luci lights.

  4. @mattdrayer I like to experiment with different type paddles as they use different muscles during a 300 mile challenge. The guy that did the fastest EC ever in class 1 no sail (72 hours) used a small mid wing and alternated with a high end fiber canoe paddle.  My goal would be to simply finish! I also have no idea how bow design of the Epic 18 handles in rough water like one encounters in FL shallow windy bays and would be curious for your thoughts

  5. Matt,

Do you happen to know of anyone that is interested in selling their used small mid wing Epic paddle like around 209 length? I know folks use them long distance paddling  (water tribe) without shoulder issues.

    Thanks

    Karen

Also interested in your training sessions

  6. Gary, I think I had lunch with you at #9 during an MDI retreat. It's also a favorite camping spot of yours.

#4 I think we were there during a water reading/nav session training session this summer. We had a lovely lunch on the balcony and talked charts and pulled out compasses. Not 100% sure.

  7. Paula,

Have you ever put on a dry suit with all of the fleece layers and warm socks you will need underneath it? AKA have you ever tried one on with all the kit? I would do so before you purchase! Unless you are 110-  120 lbs I'd question a size small.

Karen year round paddler on Lake Champlain and ocean whenever I can get to it!

  8. Assuming the sea state cooperates do you anticipate journey planning from say Ordione to Rye being a part of this class? Also, I'm very interested in local knowledge--anyone been there recently? I was there pre-covid and remember waiting for the gate to be opened at 8am?

    Is there still space?

  9. Matt,

The friend I borrowed the wing paddle from uses what he called a small face (680?). He views 5 knots as a recreational pace and 6 knots for racing.  He says he can keep this pace for 6 hours without tearing his shoulder.

He lives in West Virginia so I'm afraid not a source of wing paddles to loan.

  10. Very interested. This is the Fisherman's Beach in Swampscott? I've only used a wing paddle once for about 5 minutes. Then the guy I swapped with decided he really didn't like my Werner Cyprus . . .  Guess the catch is completely different . . .

  11. Was Bill in his Cape Falcon F1 or LPB that he was thinking about building? A friend is building me a CF LPB so I can have dreams of leaving you in the dust . . .  (Not really but I am looking forward lifting 30 lbs instead of my ~62ish Cetus MV)
