Chebacco Lake practice sessions
Come join us at Chebacco Lake in Hamilton on Thursdays at 5pm until sunset though the summer. Practice strokes, rolls, rescues, falling out of your boat, or just watching kingfishers. Dress for immersion. A wetsuit is warm enough in early season, and keeps down the bruises from climbing back into your boat ten times a night.
We meet at the boat ramp at the south end of the lake, and hang out in the cove to the left of the ramp. You can either get off 128 at Pine st (exit 49) and head north, or find Chebacco road off Rt 22 in Essex. No entrance fees. Sign up below if you're coming.

Saturday "Something" Paddle @ Fishermans Beach, Swampscott
A "Something" is a flexible paddle designed for any and all club members with no prescribed skill level. Our only goal is to have fun together safely! We will determine the route, distance and activities to fit the interests, comfort level and appetite for challenge of folks who come. All you need is basic equipment in safe working condition. That means a sea kayak with full deck lines and bulkheads, spray skirt, dress for immersion. Please bring a helmet if you want to play in rocks or surf.
Please arrive at Fisherman’s Beach in Swampscott no later than 8:30 am for a 9 am launch. Parking is free so it does fill up quickly on a nice morning!
The "Forecast For Something" as we call it: light winds, lower humidity and air temps in the low 70s. It's far enough out that it could change, so monitor it on Windy (compare the ECMWF, GFS and NAM models) or NOAA. High 6:31 am, Low 12:33 pm—falling through most of the trip.
Please register for the trip here: https://forms.gle/pUxNwaMmt6RZ8v6X7
I ask that you not RSVP or post a response here as I don't monitor this page, I only go by the form submissions. If the trip fills up the form will become a waitlist.
PM me if you have any questions!

11th Annual NSPN Paddle Retreat, Bar Harbor, ME
This 4 day event will be in its 11th year and is designed for NSPN folks to gather, socialize, and paddle in the Mount Desert Island area of downeast Maine.
This year’s retreat will be from Thursday afternoon Sept. 11th to Sunday afternoon Sept.14th, with group paddles each day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Most people travel & arrive on Thursday afternoon or evening, and depart on Sunday afternoon. But some arrive sooner and leave later, and there will be an option for a Thursday paddle or other activity. Some participants also take days off from paddling for bicycling or hiking on the trails of Acadia National Park.
Our base of operations will be at Rose Eden Cottages, a cottage resort with some 12 cabins between the Narrows and the town of Bar Harbor Bar Harbor, near Hadley Point. We can gather at Rose Eden for car caravans to launch sites, and in the evening to socialize and plan next day’s trips.
For those who plan to stay elsewhere, there is a wide variety of accommodations in the area, including nearby campgrounds which have been popular.
Accommodations are on your own. Make your own arrangements (including reservations, cancellations deposits , etc) for your entire stay during this event. You are encouraged to make reservations (at Rose Eden or elsewhere) as far in advance as possible.
Each day’s paddle trips planned the previous day, usually by some sort of meeting at Rose Eden or nearby.
Some favorite destinations are: the Porcupine Islands off of Bar Harbor in Frenchman’s Bay, the Cranberry Islands on the south side of MDI, Bartlett Island and Sound, and the dramatic eastern shore of the island between Bar Harbor and Seal Harbor
This is a rain or shine event, unlikely to be canceled since there’s usually some place to paddle around MDI in all but harshest conditions, and there are many other activities in the area as an alternative. It’s a good event to bring family members who
If you are interested in attending, please RSVP ( check " I’m going") here in the Calendar Posting
A Group PM with all participants will start a few months before the event , for information sharing, planning and communication.
If you have any questions: contact Peter Brady (PeterB on the message board) by PM on the message board, or reply here.

Wed, May 23, 2018 09:00 PM 11:30 PM
This event began 05/23/2018 and repeats every week on Wednesday until 08/29/2018
Greenland rolling, euro-paddle rolling, goose-decoy rolling, norsaq rolling, hand rolling, rescue practice, standing up in a kayak and juggling, sitting in kayaks talking without ever getting wet, strokes practice, stupid kayak tricks, Walden Pond on Wednesday evenings has something for nearly every kayaker. Come join us. It is on the calendar for 2018 from May 23rd through August 29th, though it may keep going even longer.
Two-person-minimum. Each week’s session is considered automatically canceled unless at least two people post in the “Trips / NSPN Events” forum that they plan to attend. This is mainly to handle thunderstorms in the forecast, but also to coordinate things like the occasional dinner plans (usually at Comella’s).
Plan-B is White Pond. Walden is wonderful but sometimes closes. Find that and other information at https://twitter.com/waldenpondstate. Plan-B is if Walden tweets they are closed, even if they plan to reopen that day, or if you find yourself locked out of Walden when you arrive, head to White Pond. White Pond is an 8 minute (10 to 16 minutes at rush hour) drive from Walden. It has very limited parking, so generally we drop kayaks, but park at a nearby school. Google Maps describes the put-in as 5B Plainfield Rd, Concord, MA 01742, the school where we park is Willard Elementary. White Pond is rolling and rescue friendly. Practice takes place right at the put-in so it is very nice for late arrivals. AMC Boston’s White-Water paddlers have their pond social there on Wednesdays, and the leader knows White Pond is our Plan-B; Walden has been their Plan-B in the past. We put-in right next to a PRIVATE members only swim beach. Technically non-members are not supposed to use the beach restrooms. Though I have heard of people getting permission from life-guards in the past.
You will need to sign an NSPN waiver ( https://www.nspn.org/waiver/ ). Walden Pond sessions do not include a beach briefing, and often have staggered launches. So to comply with NSPN policy, please print your own waiver copies and bring a signed copy to each pond session. If you forget to bring a waiver, please sign the waiver of someone who remembered.
You will need a parking pass at Walden (White Pond is free). If you are 62 or older and a MA resident, get a Senior ParksPass for $10. If you live in MA and just want to try Walden the “borrow a ParksPass program” might work for you. If you plan to be a regular consider a season pass. Otherwise pay the daily Walden parking fee (there is a kiosk by the boat ramp accepting debit/credit cards).
For those new to Walden, I played around with Google Maps and created this custom map showing the following places.
Main Parking Entrance: We rarely park in the main parking lot unless we arrive late, or need the bathroom facilities in the main parking area.
Boat Ramp Entrance: There is a gravel driveway on the other side of the road just a bit south of the main parking lot which leads to the boat ramp. We can now purchase parking passes from a machine at the Boat Ramp near the water.
Boat Ramp: Only cars with boats or handicapped tags are supposed to use the limited boat ramp parking. Be nice to the rangers, most of whom will react by being quite nice. Though a few are very "by the book" grumpy types. The rangers announce the boat ramp will be closing usually 20 to 30 minutes before it closes. The rangers close both the boat ramp parking lot and the in-gate for main parking half an hour before the main parking lot's out-gate closes.
Beach Bathhouse: There are also larger bathroom/changing facilities at the main beach, a short walk from the boat ramp, though with more limited days and hours.
We usually practice here: An initial pod of kayaks usually launches between 5:00pm and 5:30pm. If you get there late, no problem, just paddle to the other end of the pond from the boat ramp where you will usually find us practicing out of sight from the boat ramp but within sight of “We usually practice here.”
There is no leader, but I hope to be a Walden Pond regular again this year. I also hope to see lots of new and old faces this year!
