Chebacco Lake practice sessions
Come join us at Chebacco Lake in Hamilton on Thursdays at 5pm until sunset though the summer. Practice strokes, rolls, rescues, falling out of your boat, or just watching kingfishers. Dress for immersion. A wetsuit is warm enough in early season, and keeps down the bruises from climbing back into your boat ten times a night.
We meet at the boat ramp at the south end of the lake, and hang out in the cove to the left of the ramp. You can either get off 128 at Pine st (exit 49) and head north, or find Chebacco road off Rt 22 in Essex. No entrance fees. Sign up below if you're coming.
Rick and I will both be gone this week, back next week.

11th Annual NSPN Paddle Retreat, Bar Harbor, ME
This 4 day event will be in its 11th year and is designed for NSPN folks to gather, socialize, and paddle in the Mount Desert Island area of downeast Maine.
This year’s retreat will be from Thursday afternoon Sept. 11th to Sunday afternoon Sept.14th, with group paddles each day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Most people travel & arrive on Thursday afternoon or evening, and depart on Sunday afternoon. But some arrive sooner and leave later, and there will be an option for a Thursday paddle or other activity. Some participants also take days off from paddling for bicycling or hiking on the trails of Acadia National Park.
Our base of operations will be at Rose Eden Cottages, a cottage resort with some 12 cabins between the Narrows and the town of Bar Harbor Bar Harbor, near Hadley Point. We can gather at Rose Eden for car caravans to launch sites, and in the evening to socialize and plan next day’s trips.
For those who plan to stay elsewhere, there is a wide variety of accommodations in the area, including nearby campgrounds which have been popular.
Accommodations are on your own. Make your own arrangements (including reservations, cancellations deposits , etc) for your entire stay during this event. You are encouraged to make reservations (at Rose Eden or elsewhere) as far in advance as possible.
Each day’s paddle trips planned the previous day, usually by some sort of meeting at Rose Eden or nearby.
Some favorite destinations are: the Porcupine Islands off of Bar Harbor in Frenchman’s Bay, the Cranberry Islands on the south side of MDI, Bartlett Island and Sound, and the dramatic eastern shore of the island between Bar Harbor and Seal Harbor
This is a rain or shine event, unlikely to be canceled since there’s usually some place to paddle around MDI in all but harshest conditions, and there are many other activities in the area as an alternative. It’s a good event to bring family members who
If you are interested in attending, please RSVP ( check " I’m going") here in the Calendar Posting
A Group PM with all participants will start a few months before the event , for information sharing, planning and communication.

The 2013 New to Kayak Camping Trips
This year we plan to offer three sea kayak camping trips. The trip dates are; May 4&5, June 8&9 and July 13&14. We would like to keep the size of the group to no more than 6 campers on each trip due to group size limitations on some of the islands. That means we are looking for up to four campers to join us on each trip. It is open to both men and women on a first come first served basis via PM or e-mail.
You do need to have paddling skills which would allow you to complete a L3 trip as outlined on the NSPN web site. Therefore, we reserve the right to deny participation if we believe a paddler does not have the basic paddling skills to successfully complete a L3 journey. Each trip will be run as a CAM trip. You will also need to be a member of the Maine Island Trail Association (MITA) (www.mita.org). For the May trip, a dry suit is required. A dry suit is optional on the June and July trips.
Although we have titled these trips as new to kayak camping, if you are a novice camper or have not gained much experience camping on islands off the coast of Maine, feel free to sign up for one or more of the trips described below.
May 4 and 5 Trip
Tentatively, we are hoping to explore Muscongus Bay during the May trip. We will probably camp in the inner section of the bay as well as explore as much of the bay as weather and time permits. During the first weekend in May last year, we camped and explored the bay and it was wonderful at that time. We will be camping on a MITA island and maybe visiting several other MITA islands. At the end of the trip, it is our hope that you will come away with a good understanding of launching and camping opportunities in the bay for future trips.
June 8 and 9 Trip
Tentatively, we are hoping to explore the middle section of Casco Bay and camp on a Maine Coast Heritage Trust Island (MCHT) (www.mcht.org). This section of Casco Bay has great MITA islands to explore, seal colonies as well as osprey and eagle nests to view. It is one of my favorite sections along the coast of Maine. I suspect there will be more than enough for us to see and you may be visualizing return trips to this section during the off seasons.
July 13 and 14 Trip
Tentatively we may paddle in the eastern end of Casco Bay in the Sebascodegan Island waters. There is much to see in this section and great camping sites. I sense that these waters tend to be “off the beaten path” and I can’t understand why. Once you gain the knowledge of this area, I suspect you will return often.
So there you go! Once you sign up and we approve, we will guide you with more information to help us all have safe, comfortable and fun trips. We encourage you to see if any or all of these dates work and whether these locations hold any interest for you.
Please PM either of us or you can reach Warren via e-mail (wjosh51 at yahoo dot com)

NSPN CAM (Common Adventure Model) Paddling Trips workshop
Sunday June 9th
9:00 AM to 4PM
NSPN Members are welcome to our CAM (Common Adventure Model) on-the water paddling Trips workshop.
This the second of two NSPN group paddling trips sessions. This is an all-day, on-the -water- event. Groups led by experienced presenters will cover essentials for groups paddling on the water: Our goal is to help club members build the skills and knowledge they need to be active participants in club trips.
The on-water workshops will be run in groups, and will principally be rated Level 3 conditions, which means participants should have basic boat handling skills and be comfortable maneuvering their boats in coastal ocean conditions (up to 15 knot winds, 2 foot seas and 2 knot currents). Because the ocean temperatures are still very cold in May and June, we will require proper immersion gear of all participantsspecifically dry suits and neoprene gloves and hoods. If you do not have the appropriate gear and protective clothing, we may be able to arrange a loan of a limited number of dry suits, tow belts, gloves, hoods, etc. The on-water exercises involved getting in the water multiple times, so immersion gear is essential: these sessions are intended for paddlers prepared to get wet.
On-water sessions will be held on the North Shore, somewhere between Boston and Portsmouth, NH, depending on conditions on the day of the on-water sessions.
These workshops will be run as RSVP trips, meaning people will need to register in advance. Times and locations will be emailed to registered participants only and will not be posted on the NSPN website. To sign up for the workshops or if you have questions on gear or whether the on-water sessions are appropriate for you, contact the coordinator for the series:
