Gordon College pool session
Pool is in the Bennett Center. Bring boats in through the side door directly to the pool, not through the lobby. Clean boats inside and out, please.
Come learn to roll or practice rescues! Pool sessions are a great way to keep existing skills active over the cold winter months or work on new skills for the upcoming paddling season. Although NSPN does not offer official instruction, many members are willing to offer whatever assistance they can while they are at the pool. However, if you would like to pay for professional instruction, you can seek out an instructor directly, either from NSPN members (some of whom are actually certified!) or from other professional instructors,
You'll need a kayak, paddle, sprayskirt, and lifejacket. You'll likely want a mask and maybe a paddle float. Light neoprene clothing works well, both to keep warm and to keep down the bruises on your legs from jumping in and out of your boat.
Instructions to purchase pool sessions are here. Cost is $30. If you have trouble with membership or purchasing a session, email [email protected]
These sessions are offered as a benefit to paid members of NSPN, and therefore are only available to active members. We are required to have insurance in order to use the pool facilities, and we use the ACA club insurance program. This is an ACA supported event. You must be a current ACA member to participate. Our skills sessions are also ACA supported events, so it's worth joining.
We cannot issue any refunds unless the session is cancelled due to inclement weather or other reasons. If you are unable to attend a pool session after purchase and would like to let someone else purchase the session from you, you must make those arrangements on your own. You can post here to offer your session to another NSPN + ACA member.

Winter Party
Hi Folks,
As has been our tradition, the Winter Party will be a Pot Luck event. Only if you plan to attend, please indicate "going" here on the calendar, "maybe" and "not going" are not necessary to indicate. If going, now you are half done! Please state below what food item you plan to bring and if it is an appetizer, side dish, main dish or dessert. Please read what others have listed and try to adjust what you plan to bring. We don't want to end up with only one or two of the food group categories to feed a hungry crowd. You know NSPNers love to eat, so this is the time to show off your cooking skills!
Folks will be responsible to bring their own non-alcoholic beverages. Water, tea and coffee will be provided by NSPN, as well as plates, bowls, flatware, hot/cold cups and napkins. For those who volunteer to set up tables and chairs, I will need you to arrive at 4:30. Once I see who is coming, I will contact a few hardy souls to assist me in this task. Thanks in advance!
Parking: There is ample parking in front of the Center. Please pull in facing the split rail fence.
I hope to see you all there! Sue

Bold Coast PaddleThis Level-3-and-up trip will visit one of the most dramatic coastlines in the world, Maine's Bold Coast, the long weekend of Friday August 10 - Monday August 13. Ranging from Machias Bay to Lubec and beyond to Canada's Campobello Island, the Bold Coast is a largely undeveloped and wild region with lots of dramatic cliffs and rocks, 25+ foot tidal ranges, strong currents and quite unpredictable weather. (See the trip report from last year's MITA scouting trip which was a smaller, non-club paddle.) The tourists and pleasure boaters don't make it up this far, which accounts for even more of its charm.
The plan for this trip is to section-paddle various portions of the Bold Coast, Campobello Island and Cobscook Bay, adjusting the plan for conditions, interest and level of challenge. The sectional approach contrasts with trips that attempt to run the coast during a single tide cycle, which offers much less of an opportunity to explore the beauty of the region (and less flexibility if adverse conditions arise). Without hard tidal deadlines for launching or landing, we can pick various out-and-back or shuttle adventures and have a lot of freedom with the length and nature of the paddles. During this weekend, high tide will mostly occur around midday -- and it's a new moon spring tide, so there is an extra helping of current on this trip! If conditions really suck on any given day, there is also really great hiking in the area.
(NOTE: Even in mid-August the water in this region is in the mid 50s, with air temps in 60s. A drysuit is very much in order, and you're unlikely to get that hot.)
Home base for this adventure is the Sunset Point RV Park in Lubec, which is a very clean and well-run campsite. It's not all RV's -- actually, the area reserved for tents is a lovely grassy headland that juts out into Johnson Bay, with its own little pavilion. The fee will run around $15 per night, but it may be less than that depending on how many campers we get -- when we finalize attendance, I'll be able to get the number. Showers are free with unlimited hot water and if you care, there is free Internet at the office.
While this is posted as a 4-day event, folks can easily extend it (or shorten it) in either direction. However, it takes 6-7 hours to get up there or come back from there, so allocate a day for travel on either side.
If you're interested, please RSVP to indicate and I will pick this up via a PM thread. I would like to get the attendee list nailed down by the end of April so that we can finalize our reservation with the campground since it may start to fill up.
