2017 CAM On-Water Training #1 June 10th

For many years now, NSPN has organized it's trips using a system called the Common Adventure Model, or CAM.  Common Adventure trips can be very interactive for all participants, and therefore tend to encourage learning and improving various paddling skills.  Using this system, paddlers can quickly develop the skills to be a more confident paddler, more capable group member, and even become a group leader themselves.

The On-Water training sessions are designed for the more skilled paddler to explore various leadership and advanced participant skills including group management and incident management.  Due to the time of year, location, and expected activities (people will be in the water) cold-water gear is required (drysuits, or wetsuits if weather permits).  This year, we have decided to emphasize the core CAM concepts, and use the opportunity to dispel some long-standing CAM misunderstandings such as "CAM is leaderless".  Even if you are a long-time NSPN paddler and think you know CAM, you should come and join in on the conversations.

These sessions are not sequential, and do not require previous classroom attendance, so if you can attend only one, that is fine.  However, each session will be quite different, and it would be beneficial to attend both if possible.  Please RSVP on the calendar to indicate you would like to attend.  Location and launch time will be provided to those who mark themselves as 'Maybe" or "Going".

Just a reminder that this CAM session is coming up this Saturday. Location will be determined as the weather forecast becomes available.  Please RSVP on the calendar since we will use that list to contact participants with location and time details.

Please feel free to send me a message if you are not sure if you should attend this session or wait for a summer session.

The weekend is coming up fast, and the forecast seems to be holding as a fairly nice and mostly sunny day with a gentle SW wind and temps in the 70s.  There are nine of us who have indicated on the calendar that we are Going, with another four listed as Maybe.  I would like to have everyone confirmed and close out registration by 5pm Friday so that a float plan can be put together, so please make sure to go to the calendar and change your status if needed to either Going or Not Going.  You MUST register and be listed on the float plan in order to attend - no exceptions, so please make sure that you confirm your intention to attend.  I will be contacting everyone soon regarding float plan information.

The current trip plan would be to launch out of Manchester and paddle around the various islands in Salem Sound so that we can work on navigating the various islands while also dealing with group dynamics, incident management, and other aspects within the Common Adventure Model.  I don't expect to put in a vast amount of mileage, and we will most likely split into two groups to allow for some diversity.  While I would prefer an early launch time to ensure we get parking spaces, I know that others tend to start later, so lets compromise and be ready to launch by 9:30am and we will start our training at the launch with group assignments and briefings.  If there are any questions, please feel free to post here or contact me directly.

Absolutely, and if your ankle ends up being an issue, we will just use it as an incident management scenario :D

Could you give a bit more detail on where we park, unload and launch?  I have a map - It shows Church st. off of 127 at north end of harbor.  Do we park on the street or is there a parking lot?  Is there a public launch or beach?   Thanks, Sherry
