  1. I planning to be there. What's the arrangement with the campground? Should we make individual reservations? or will this be done en-mass? I'm actually thinking about camping there the week before (maybe arriving on 9/16) for a few days of meditation / paddling / chilling out (hopefully not TOO chilly).

  2. Wonderful report, Robert. I'll just add a bit about the surf off the Punch Bowl. I was watching it from half way up the east side of Jewell, a good thing to do so you can see what's cooking periodically when the biggest swells come through. From that distance it looked like we'd have to go really wide to get around the surf zone. As we got closer we could see that waves were crashing over the rocks just outside the Punch Bowl, and a bit further out a single long wave (50 to 80 yards?) would break in exactly the same spot each time and then immediately peter out. Wasn't quite sure what that was about (more ledge?) but back at camp, one chart showed the depth where we were paddling as 19' and just beyond that breaking wave as up to 45' ! If it hadn't been such a schlogg up from the southern tip of the island I'd have been tempted to go out and play in it a bit.

Oh, and the "butterfly rescue" (not roll). We were paddling from Whaleboat to Horse and Little Birch when someone noticed something fluttering on the water. It looked to me like a bird, but no bigger than a humming bird and the wrong color. I scooped it up to find that it was a moth, beautiful black and white wings, with a couple of bright red strips on the head. It lay spent on my spray deck barely flapping. I let it crawl onto my hand where it seemed quite at home, but I'd have crushed it if I grabbed the paddle so finally convinced it to ride along on my PFD. As we paddled, it flapped its wings more and more energetically, drying them out, climbed up the antenna of my radio, back to the PDF and finally flew off. Not to get to touchy-feely about it, but it sure was encouraging to see a creature so fragile struggle so valiantly and survive. Hope if I ever need it I can find half that much courage.

And, for the Spring Jewell Trip we're thinking coon-skin hats for everyone.
