  1. This Cetus is an expedition layup, which is super rugged, weighs around 57lbs. Has superficial hull & deck scratches from previous paddling adventures but no major dings or cracks. Also has keel strip, P&H deck logo, deck compass & bulkhead footrest. If you want a sea kayak that offers excellent performance in all conditions, look no further.  $2800

  3. American Canoe Association
    Level 3/4: Coastal Kayak/Open Water
    Instructor Development Workshop/Instructor Update

    Dates:
    May 7-10, 2014

    Location:
The IDW will be based out on Osprey Sea Kayak Adventures, Westport MA. This location provides candidates with access to a variety of coastal and open water venues within a short commute and has excellent camping 3/10 of a mile from the base.

    Overview:
The purpose of the Level 3/4 Instructor Development Workshop is to expose candidates to a variety of teaching/coaching methods and behaviors intended to prepare them for teaching and leading in either coastal or open water environments. At its core, the L3/4 IDW is a highly student centered experience where candidates will have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of teaching methods and challenge themselves in the environment while receiving feedback from both peers and the instructional staff.

    Areas Covered:
    • The Coaching/Teaching Process
    • Personal Skills Refinement
    • Teaching the Principals of Paddlesport
    • Teaching Navigation for Coastal/Open Water Paddlers
    • The ACA our National Paddlesports Body

    General ACA IDW Pre-Requisites:
    • Be 18 years or older
    • Be a current ACA member in good standing
    • Be able to independently participate in all skills, activities and rescues listed in the appropriate
    • ACA Certification Course Outline and Instructor Criteria documents
    • Be able to effectively communicate with the Instructor Trainer and other course participants
    • Be able to manage all personal care and mobility independently
    • Meet the ACA Essential Eligibility Criteria

    ACA L3/4 IDW Candidate Pre-requisites:
While time will be spent refining personal skill and addressing a spectrum of techniques, the purpose of an IDW is not to teach candidates fundamental strokes or maneuvering skills. Therefore, candidates must be confident maneuvering, preforming rescues and managing basic incidents in either the L3 or L4 venue at the beginning of the course. If you are unclear about your level of readiness we encourage you contact a current ACA Instructor and participate in a either a L3 or L4 Coastal Kayak Skills Assessment.

    ACA L3/4 Update Pre-Requisites:
    • Meet all of the aforementioned criteria.
    • Teach and Report to the National Office at least two courses that meet either the L3 or L4 standard within the four year certification period.
    • Maintain ACA Membership and SEIC Registration annually.
    • Possess current First Aid and age appropriate CPR credentials.

Why do we separate the IDW and ICE (Instructor Certification Exam):
We believe it is unrealistic to expose candidates to potentially new concepts and content early in a course and expect unconscious competence or mastery in days or hours without adequate time for practice and application. It is equally unrealistic for assessors to perform a formal, objective examination in the context of a training course, when candidates are expected to be experimenting with new concepts, content and coaching behaviors. Instead, we prefer students to leave the IDW with new skills, ideas and a comprehensive action plan and then take time to put this new learning into practice and before attending an ICE.

    ICE:
We will be offering a L3/4 ICE August 7-9 2014 in Maine.

    Instructional Staff:

    SOLO Wilderness First Aid H2O
    « on: Today at 08:36:32 AM »
Osprey Sea Kayak Adventures Is proud to be hosting this SOLO workshop.
Backcountry injuries and illness do not always happen in the woods or on mountains but can occur on rivers, lakes and in open ocean environments. While these injuries and illnesses share commonalties with those experienced in other environments the prevention, management, mode of treatment and evacuation can be quite different. Therefore, SOLO has adapted the Wilderness First Aid curriculum to better suit the needs of recreational and professional paddlers.

This 16-hour (2-day) program, addresses the prevention and management of outdoor related injury and illness to include long-term care, evacuation procedures, patient management in transition zones (where the water meets the land) and group management.

Classroom discussions are reinforced with intensive practical work, scenarios and problem-solving exercises. The emphasis is always on hands-on experience therefore, scenarios are an important part of this training. This course can also serve as a Wilderness First Responder Refresher.
For more information or to register please contact Osprey Sea Kayak Adventures.

  13. Rough Water Sea Kayaking Weekend With Carl Ladd & John Carmody

Tide, current, wind and swell,—it’s all a part of kayaking on the sea. You’ll take your existing skills and apply them in the dynamic environments of open water, tidal currents, or surf. Not only will you learn to deal with these conditions, but you’ll also discover how to make various water features work for you to make paddling more efficient and fun.Topics covered will depend on the conditions we find, but may include simple navigation, entering and exiting currents, ferry gliding, handling following seas, bracing and recoveries in open water, and launching and landing through the surf zone. Day one will be more focused on boat handling abilities and navigation skills, piloting and dead reckoning. Day two we plan to put our skills to the test on either a coastal day trip or, weather willing, a crossing to Cuttyhunk & Elizabeth Islands. Call the shop to register 508-636-0300

    Dates: September 10th & 11th, Cost: $250.00
