Adam Bolonsky
Thanks to NSPNers Cathy, David, Mary and kayakers from the Wild Turkeys, West Coast Paddler, and UK Rivers Guidebook community, I was able to run a month's tests with the SPOT emergency gps-based messaging and mapping unit. The unit doesn't cost much ($170; $90 for yearly service) and has only a small handful of first-generation quirks. One handy feature of the maps the unit creates and sends via email and sms text messaging is that the data can be viewed as user-friendly Google Maps or as downloadable csv, gpx or kml files. The five-part series is on my blog at paddlingtravelers.blogspot.com A review of the unit will appear in print this spring.
