Beginner's Pool Session

Event details

This event begins 05/21/2010 and repeats every week until 05/22/2010

Did you get to the Introduction to Sea Kayaking Workshop? Are you itching to get in a boat? Come on out to our pool session designed just for you! In this two hour session, we'll cover everything from wet exits and boat maneuvering to self and assisted rescues. Join us afterwards for the traditional PPPO! Some come on out and join us in Haverhill!

What can I do at a pool session?

All of our pool sessions this year have been "Open Practice" format where you can learn from your peers. Things that can be practiced in a pool include skills, techniques and strokes that do not need an expanse of water, such as:

  • Wet exits;
  • Rescues, assisted and unassisted;
  • Equipment testing, exploration, shakedown, usage or just getting

    comfortable, for example, using a paddle float for rescues;

  • Strokes not needing an expanse of water, such as draw and pry;
  • Rolling, bracing, balance bracing, sculling, etc.
What equipment might I need?

This depends on what you plan to do. Although we prefer that you use your own equipment, boats, pfds and paddle may be available with advance notice.

Below are some suggestions:

  • PFD-Everyone needs to wear a PFD if they are going to be in the pool.
  • Spray skirt -- required for the vast majority of skills to be

    practiced.

  • Paddle float -- optional, for rescue practice, rolling practice, etc.
  • Pump -- optional for practice involving capsized or swamped boats
  • Goggles or a face mask -- highly recommended for practice that

    involves immersion, since chlorinated pools can be hard on the eyes.

  • $20 for members (you must be a member to attend these sessions) You do not need to be a member for this session.
