Nigel Foster: Advanced Long Boat Surf Class

TIME and LOCATION: Given on Registration or Day Before (requires conditions)

NSPN is pleased to have Nigel Foster back again to teach two surf classes. A basic long boat class on 11/4, and an advanced long boat class on 11/5. Learn about safety, wave patterns, controlling your boat and many other important skills for the surf zone.

Nigel is a well known, international figure in sea kayaking and has written a book on surf kayaking. Please check out this link for more info: www.nigelfosterdesigns.com

Other information:

Basic Class: This class is geared towards those comfortable with wet exits and being in small surf. Participants signing up should be able to perform basic strokes and rescues.

Advance Class: Participants should be comfortable in larger surf conditions, have a roll, good stroke skills, and able to perform rescues.

Location of Classes: TBD depending on the conditions. One to two days prior to the class, a decision will be made on the location and participants will be notified. Keep in mind that the classes could be held any place from the north shore to southern Maine. In the event the surf gods are not smiling, the classes will still run and will focus more on boat handling, rock gardening.

Class Size: Limited to 6 participants each day.

Advanced surf participants should have a reliable roll.

Proper Dress is Required: The water will be cold and due to the nature of class, participants without bomb proof rolls may be spending some time in the water. Since the classes are in Nov and you will get wet, dry suits are required. Helmets are also required.

Cost: $145 for NSPN members. The class is restricted to NSPN members.

How to Register: Send an email to the class facilitator, Paula, at [email protected]. Include your ACA #, boat description, emergency contact name/phone number, and your e-mail & phone number where you can be reached the day before the class. Also indicate which class you are signing up for.

Paula will tell you where to mail your check and will keep the registration list and a waiting list. Paula will only hold your slot when she receives your check made out to NSPN. If you cannot attend you will receive a refund only if your slot can be filled from the waiting list. If the class is oversubscribed Paula will ask if you want to be placed on the waiting list.

Cancellation Policy: All NSPN-sponsored commercial events are run on a “pass-through-the-cost-basis.” NSPN may include a very small markup over actual costs to cover incidental expenses and support club activities that benefit the membership as a whole. These classes are still priced well below what commercial outfitters charge for comparable activities. The club does not subsidize activities that benefit only the participants in classes with limited enrollment. Therefore, in the highly unlikely event that the class is canceled due to extreme weather, there will be no refunds.
