A "Something" is a flexible paddle designed for any and all club members with no prescribed skill level. Our only goal is to have fun together safely! We will determine the route, distance and activities to fit the interests, comfort level and appetite for challenge of folks who come. All you need is basic equipment in safe working condition. That means a sea kayak with full deck lines and bulkheads, spray skirt, dress for immersion. Please bring a helmet if you want to play in rocks or surf.
This paddle is out of Pavilion Beach, Gloucester (click link for directions or see map below for location). Please arrive no later than 8:30 am for a 9 am launch. Parking is free on the street or in the (very small) lot. You should plan on dropping off your boat and gear in the lot and then finding adjacent on-street parking, which is hardly ever a problem.
The highly unofficial Something Forecast (i.e. my best guess as of posting time) calls for light N winds shifting to 5-8 kt E, air temp 68 F, and (the most interesting part) swell that is predicted to build from 2 feet to 3-4 feet by midday. With a 9 second period, these should not be steep or breaking waves for those keeping their distance from exposed rocks, ledges and shore. But for those who want to play in the energy around such features, some opportunities could be available! We will gauge conditions as we approach the mouth of Gloucester Harbor and decide as a group whether to stay inside, go left (outside of Cape Ann towards Good Harbor) or go right (south of Cape Ann towards Magnolia).
