Facilitated by Joe Berkovitz, this 1-day interactive workshop gives participants the chance to plan several paddling trips in unfamiliar areas. Participants will engage in basic chart reading, simple navigation, tidal planning and weather/sea state predictions. Emphasis will be on basic information gathering, route selection and trip organization/communication, with a focus on practice rather than theory.
The work will be carried out in small breakout groups in morning and afternoon, with hands-on instructor support offered throughout. Groups will document their plans on paper or using online resources, and will have the chance to share their work with the entire class. Joe will begin the session with a walkthrough of planning a simple trip, using FloatingTrails as an aid to information gathering.
This workshop is open to anyone who wants to learn about planning a safe sea kayak trip. There are no prerequisites, and there will be no assigned homework or exercises. Folks should bring their laptops or other means to connect to the internet and nautical charts.
Please bring a laptop or tablet computer to the event. Coffee and tea to be provided, participants need to bring their own lunch.
