Reminder that the last 2012 CAM Workshop is this Sunday, June 3. We still have room for Level 2 and Level 3 paddlers.

This is an RSVP event which means you must email the coordinator to register and get logistical information (see below).

2012 NSPN CAM Workshops

Program Description

As in past years, NSPN is putting on spring workshops led by experienced club members who are volunteering to share what they have learned. Our goal is to help club members build the skills and knowledge they need to be active participants in club trips.

The workshops are fun, and its great to get the club together to share paddling knowledge, and skills.

On-the-water workshop: Sunday June 3rd.

This year, the workshops are run as RSVP trips, meaning people will need to register in advance. Times and locations will be emailed to registered participants only and will not be posted on the NSPN website. To sign up for the workshops or if you have questions whether the on-water sessions are appropriate for you, contact the coordinator for the series:

RSVP to Coordinator: Scott Camlin

Email Contact: scamlin at restructassoc dot com

The classroom workshops are open to Level 2 and Level 3 paddlers. Level 3 conditions mean participants should have basic boat handling skills and be comfortable maneuvering their boats in coastal ocean conditions (up to 15 knot winds, 2 foot seas and 2 knot currents). Level 2 conditions are less challenging: up to 10 kt winds, 1 foot seas and 1 kt currents. Note that while we will attempt to keep trips within the rated levels, conditions can and often exceed the criteria for a level. See the NSPN Trip Level page for details.

Ocean temperatures are unusually warm for this time of year (about 60 degrees), so while we require proper immersion gear of all participants, either a dry suit or a wetstuit/paddle jacket combination is adequate. Many will want neoprene gloves and/or hoods due to the repeated immersions that are part of the course. You will also want the other recommended gear listed on the NSPN equipment page. If you do not have the appropriate gear and protective clothing, we have extras and may be able to loan you what you need.

On Sunday, we will be reviewing the rescues and tows we covered in an earlier class this year. We will focus on reading the paddling environment and route finding. This session also includes incident management (various scenarios that may occur on paddling trips). As always, we emphasize working as a team on the water.
