To keep things simple, below I have posted this MASTER scheduling matrix prior to officially posting them on the Calendar.

If people can add events as a response on this thread, I can edit the MASTER to reflect a time-line. I think this should help keep things organized.

Phil,

The calendar and my trip posting has the correct June 2nd date for the Salem Sound L3 paddle. Thanks.

Bob

If people can add events as a response on this thread, I can edit the MASTER to reflect a time-line.

Doug:

Here are some items for the list to fix dates with details later:

Gerrish Island loop. May 5

Put all those things Rick and others have shown you in the L2 to L3 trips to work or just come for a classic warm up paddle which is by venue L3, but often conditions are benign. Intended to be just a paddle as opposed to training event, but hopefully lots of mentoring.

NH AMC training paddle on Squam Lake May 12. Basically a wander about islands with stops and time to practice various kayak techniques in benign water. Registration required as this is an NH AMC trip, but anyone welcome. More details later.

Loop around Peaks and more in Portland Harbor. June 9

This will be an SMSKN trip and anyone welcome till participation limit reached. Details will be posted on the SMSKN website soon. Leaving from East End Beach and eventually going around Peaks. Again, a chance to put to use the training given earlier as I suspect much can be seen and learned while paddling here.

York Harbor to Portsmouth Harbor and back June 21. Tentative. Idea is to have some currents to work with going in and out of the harbor and then down the coast to Wood I. and back. Intent is a full day of modest coastal paddling that can be enjoyed by this timid woodland creature and those wanting to enjoy/explore the upper end of L3 environment. Maybe this is a L4 environment? Would appreciate thoughts on that point by those who understand the trip levels better than I.

As to whether any of the ocean trips will be easy, lazy days or "sporting", beats me. Not being a clairvoyant, I have no idea what conditions will be on those dates. That said, will strive to keep things reasonable for those in the L2 to L3 category and/or those (me included) who simply enjoy paddling in that realm.

If the June 2 paddle is in Salem, then this may interest some. There is an NH AMC training/warm up paddle scheduled for June 2 at Odiorne and folks are welcome although registration, etc. required as it is a NH AMC event which has a different set of rules. I envision the day being non-destination oriented with mentoring along the way and stops inside the Little Harbor breakwater in both directions for some specific and modest practice/training. Details upon registration.

April 7 York Harbor paddle. This is a SMSKN paddle which is basically the same as the proposed paddle for the L2 to L3 series/folks for later in the season.

Purpose is to find out if my SWAG about curresnts is OK and to take an early season paddle. Please check the particpation agreement for SMSKN paddles as perhaps it is different than CAM. http://www.smskn.org/docs-two/Statement.pdf

Please notify me if coming as the trip is limited to 10 participants.

More details at the SMSKN trip posting. http://www.smskn.org/index.php?option=com_jevents&task=icalevent.detail&evid=235&Itemid=89&year=2012&month=04&day=07

I guess this is a solid L3 or may well be a L4 paddle based on venue and potential currents going in and out of York Harbor regardless of what the sea state is along the coast.

Ed raises a good point: Without knowing the conditions in advance it may be difficult to specify levels. For instance the waters between York Harbor and Portsmouth Harbor can vary from L2 to L4 on any given day. This region is rife with off shore shoals and breaking water which makes for a nice learning experience on how to establish a safe line. And then there are currents. On a calm day just paddling from Portsmouth Harbor up to Pierces Island can be an L4 if its close to flood or ebb tide. Great area to learn!

6/2 Sat AMC Training / Warn up Ed Lawson

This is an NH AMC Event in Portsmouth Area and participants must pre-register with me.

6/21 Thursday York to Portsmouth Ed Lawson

This the wrong date, but it will not be in July. I will reschedule at some point.

I posted another SMSKN paddle for June 9 which is a trip from East End Beach in Portland and out around Peaks.

Yes, I have already put it on the NSPN calendar. My intention is to cross post to NSPN any paddle I post on the SMSKN site which is from Portland south as getting more interactions between the members of the clubs is hopefully good thing. Seems to have worked well in past. My intention is to ultimately post a trip from Kennebunckport to Cape Porpoise and from York to Portsmouth as a L2 to L3 development paddle, but still sorting out dates/tides.

Doug --

Please add:

April 16 - Patriots Day Shake Out -- Mystic River from Mystics Lakes.

Thanks,

Al

PS. Will formalize and place on calendar later today probably.

Doug:

Since the May 5 Gerrish Trip was intended to be a follow up on the now cancelled April 21 event by Rick, it should be deleted from this master list.

It was never put up on the Calendar so nothing needs to be done there.
