Bolonsky Adam
Anybody know whether it's faster to access Hull and the Gut via 3A in Quincy to Hingham, etc., or whether it's faster to take 3 South down to 228 in South Hingham, then work your way north from there? Been to the Gut a few times but hated the drive so much I vowed never to do it again, and haven't, but situations tomorrow put me at the Gut . So anybody know the fastest route once you're past Dorchester?
rick stoehrer
there is NO good way - it's the massachusetts answer to the maine expresssion "can't git theyah frum heah"best of the worst ways is probably the ferry outta boston and then on the road, i've always used 3 to 228.good luck - leave early. markstephens
I agree that most people find 3/228 faster. (it is a relative term, of course.) Might depend on time of day / day of week. When I have run paddles out of Hull or Hingham Harbor, I usually send people down 3 to 228.
Bill Gwynn
I bet the fastest route from the north shore would be to put-in at deer island in Winthrop and paddle across the harbor...LOL...
Lbeale
I agree with others on Route 3--but it all depends on the time of day-driving in rush hour on Route 3 is enough reason to commit hari kari-having grown up on the South Shore, I have developed the local Bostonian talent for backstreet shortcuts. I know some back routes that are faster or at least feel faster b/c less traffic and lights--but I have to either show you in person or show you on a map--not enough time for tomorrow, but I will show you later a sweet short cut through Hingham backroads--promise--les
Sanjay
I tend to launch from Hough's Neck and paddle out 'round Peddocks to access the gut. It takes about the same amount of time to paddle there as it does to drive all the way to Windmill point. In fact, I'm planning to do exactly that tomorrow, tides and wind permitting.Sanjay
donperry
If you must drive to the windmill... Get off of route 3 at exit 15, Derby St, just after the the lane reduction. Follow Derby St to a five-way intersection (lights) where you cross route 53 to Gardner St. Then follow Gardner St to route 228 and so on.Will you be fishing the harbor? John Leonard
93 to 3A is the shortest distance, but not the fastest with a stop light every 500 ft (not an exageration). Route 3 to 228 is a bit longer, but definately faster. Getting off at Washington St. in Braintree and taking the back roads over to 3A is probably the quickest, but I couldn't tell you any of the street names.
