June
Report from Tybee Island BCU Week, Oct 2004Warm waters, sweet breezes, undulating dolphins, smiley kind of surf, 5 Star disappointment didn’t dampen the rolls, playing in fluffy creamy water, oysters and Guinness, no-see-ums, The Triangle point and shoot…great set of coaches, paddlers and players…late nights…fast days…It was a good week. You should know that NSPN put on a great display of its commitment, hard work and camaraderie. The British coaches oft commented on your friendliness and fun, and were much impressed with your on-water smarts. Four Star Sea awards were happily given to: Ken Cooper, Paula Riegal, James Kennedy, Rick Crangle and Suz Pritchett (probably have left someone out). Believe the indomitable; Mary Bennett secured her Three Star – no small feat. Scott Camlin jumped into 5 Star Training with Nigel Dennis and Steve Maynard, tho conditions were light. I heard several Coach comments of their fun in paddling this solid crowd…Congrats to you all.Other small memories: Fiona’s 300 meter no-hands surf right through the middle of a surf class…Cheri Perry’s ‘you’ve-got-to-be-kidding-me rolls’…Jas Hepburns melodious, booming coaching voice…Nig Foster’s ever present espresso machine…Gordon Brown’s gentle talk on the History of the Anas Acuta…Pete Bray’s Hat Stupid display…Docs Bar’s 95 year old electric tambourine gal...Ben Lawry’s jabs & prys…Danny Mongo’s Monster Truck and stories of surfing in the tube…Axel’s beginner 3 Star Training in 4 Star conditions…Trys Morris’s long boat surfing…Jean Totz’s giggles…Russell Farrow’s smile and guitar…Nigel Dennis’s quiet, power as the originator, The Don, of so much of it all……and finally for the record: As Game 7 wound down, the Docs Bar crowd cranked it up and roared for the Boston Red Socks, interrupting the music to report the demise of those New York Yankey’s piece by piece. Why so many Red Sox’s fans deep in the South? Was it the friendliness of the NSPNers? Were they trying to be polite to us? Well it seems these Southerners still deeply remember when the Yanks cannon-balled their local Civil War era Fort Pulaski and so were now damp pleased to be celebrating the modern Yankee’s loss……figure on that! Many thanks to Dale and Debbie Williams and the crew at Sea Kayak Georgia, especially to the morning show of Don and Marsha that somehow got 100 boats and 100 people to a half dozen separate events, starting at the same time, in different places, with 3 trailers and 2 vehicles…Good Journeys,Tom Bergh, Maine Island Kayak Co
