My Checklist

On the beach before the rescue practice organized our one and only Rick Stoehrer, I showed folks my checklist. As requested, I am pasting it here.

I encourage people to make up your own: to suit your boat and your gear. This one is for my Gulfstream, which has a day hatch. My KS Vivianne does not, so I have to alter my list when I change kayaks.

I put together this list by looking at every list I could get my hands on - there are many on the web and in books, and Peter Logan did a great one for a workshop a couple of years ago - then figuring out what I had and where I wanted to carry each item.

Some people - lots actually - organize lists by function. I did that at first, to make sure I had all the functions covered, then moved everything around as you see it below.

There are some duplications. That is intentional. For example, I want to have identification on me, in my PFD pocket, and in my kayak, in the event one of us washes up somewhere without the other. I want some cash stashed in a couple of places. Twice this summer Karen Gladstone aand I paddled past clammers and had no $$$ to buy some. :-(( When I have my deck-mounted tow rig with me, I also bring my Salamander tow belt, in case someone else needs to borrow it. I have several emergency blankets and cheap plastic rain ponchos stuck here and there.

When I am loading my gear for a trip I put things in bags, grouped like this:

nylon bag: holds everything that goes in the day hatch

small mesh backpack bag: holds everything that goes on the kayak, in the cockpit or on me, i.e., the "wet stuff."

large mesh shoulder bag: the nylon bag and everything else - basically my "dry stuff". (Actually I made this one so it will hold my paddles also.)

So, I fit everything in two mesh bags, both with shoulder straps, and can carry it all to the beach, while holding one end of my kayak. Once my kayak is loaded, the mesh bags go in a hatch - I don't have to return to the car. I do the reverse at the end of the trip.

NOTE: I do not necessarily take all of this on every trip, but looking at it helps me not forget things.
