John Leonard
Hi all,Has anyone used or heard anything good or bad about the EWA waterproof camera cases? They look a bit too much like a basic plastic bag and seem a bit pricey for what they appear to be. I know looks can be deceiving and I figured someone here must know about them! They appear to be one of the only options for the camera I have as the waterproof case is no longer made for it and NOBODY has them in stock (except for one place in England that wont ship overseas). I like my camera and would prefer not to buy another for on the water use. I know there are some high end dive cases that will fit anything, but they are too pricy and bulky. Thanks,John
stnoonan
EWA cases are indeed little more than plastic bags. Expensive ones too. They are also prone to condensation and can be tricky to close. That said, there isn't much out there that is really effective and does not cost an arm and a leg. What body and lens are you planning on using? I may be able to find something for you. John Leonard
Thanks Sean, That's kinda what I figured. I have an Olympus Camedia C 3000 digital camera. It's an older model but it still works well. Olympus hasn't made the waterproof housings for it in years. If I can't find something that works well I may buy a newer camera that has a case available. It seems like the newer digital cameras are getting allot smaller and faster, so I am not totally opposed to the idea of getting an new camera. dan_f
Hi John, If you decide to get a new camera, you might want to take a look at the Sony DSC-P150 if you don't mind the memory sticks Sony uses. It is really tiny, has low noise, 7 megapixels, and Sony makes a waterproof case for it. The reviews have been very good. I bought a Canon S-70 because I am a Canon loyalist, but it is on the verge of being too large for a kayak. The Sony will be at home in a surf ski.Dan
kate
http://www.backscatter.com/hostedstore/products/PT-010.html Amazingly they still have the housing. It still costs the same as when I bought mine for my c3000. Frankly, although the housing works great for diving I tried it for boating and it's just too clunky. Can't keep it on the deck, bulky knocking around in the cockpit. I'd suggest putting the same amount of money into the Pentax Optio 43 WR. Fits in pfd pocket, waterproof, has an extra megapixel over the c3000. Only thing is that it's point-n-shoot, not much in the way of manual controls. But it does a very good job. The c3000 now lives in the closet awaiting the next dive trip. kate
John Leonard
Thanks Kate,That's a good point about the size of the C 3000. It is a big camera. I spent some time last night looking at the Sony that Dan mentioned and realized that the technology has come a long way in the past couple of years. Between that (no more 1 second shutter lag?) and the size of the Olympus housing it is probably time to upgrade. I do appreciate the help and the opinions! Thanks,John
Brian Nystrom
The Sony waterproof housing is quite small by comparison to the Canon housing. It doesn't offer full control like the Canon, but it seems to offer more than enough for on-water use. Linda and I love our S45 & S50, but if I had to do it again, I'd likely go with the Sony.
