donperry
I was up by the Rangeley Lakes this weekend. Skies were cloudy with rain on Saturday but clear calm & glorious on Sunday. All the lakes are very high… unusual for this time of year. Both Richardson and Moose-lick are brimful. Umbagog is also very high. Aziscohos Reservoir was a couple of feet from the top and the highest I’ve ever seen it. There was the perfect opportunity for some mountain lake paddling during the peak of autumn colors. The few camps on the lower third of the lake all seemed abandoned for the season. A few birds and dozens of loons were all I could see nearby on the water. Miles away a small motorboat moved along the shoreline and a floatplane landed & took off in near silence. There should still be good color up there next weekend and I’m looking forward to some more big lake paddling while it lasts. It’ s best to launch on the south side in the morning and paddle the western shores clockwise around the lake with the sun at your back. Solar glare can be blinding this time of year.
