markstephens
Anyone interested in a Woods Hole to Vineyard Haven trip on Tuesday? A couple of us plan to paddle across to the Vineyard on the fast flood in the morning, have lunch at the Black Dog, and then catch the fast ebb current back mid-afternoon. Tuesday is a New Moon which means Spring Tides and some of the fastest currents we get down there - up to four knots in Woods Hole and over 3.5 knots off West Chop. Total trip distance is 15-18 miles, but it will feel like a whole lot less with all that current. I plan to paddle around Middle Ground Shoal, which can be very rough during faster currents. The other safety concern is the ferries, as the route is basically where the ferries run between Woods Hole and the Vineyard.Looking for strong, fast paddlers, as we want to make this run in two hours or less, each way. markstephens
Hi, Rick: Great to have you along. You coming down from Gloucester Tuesday morning? Long drive to Woods Hole. Well, the fastest part of the flood tide will be around 9AM, but we don't need to get over there so early. I was thinking to maybe launch 9:30-10:00. Somewhat flexible here. EDIT - Let's shoot for a 9:30 launch-time. We'll head out just behind the 9:30 Oak Bluffs ferry, which will give us a fairly ferry-free window for the crossing. Put-in is at the NOAA Aquarium. Let me know if you need directions. Since it is a weekday, we will probably have to park on Bar Neck Road, which is only a block away...
