Kevin B (RPS Coach)
Planning a beginner surf session on Friday. Too far out to know about conditions yet, but will plan on it instead of a Forest River Session. So come on down and surf. This week will be followed by a BYOBB PPPO at our place in Salem (PLEASE RSVP with us). BYOBB = Bring Your Own Booze and Barbeque. It'll be Americana themed. We'll supply the burgers and dogs if others can bring sides and drinks. Of course, you can't mind dogs...of course, did I tell you about the Mont Blanc pen that Emmy ate! Hope to see everyone on Friday!

Hope to see everyone on Friday! Hi Kev, I remember we had a blast last year surfing Nahant. Before discovering paddling I bought and rebuilt 200+ antique and vintage fountain pens, thinking a new hobby would flourish. So if you promise me something besides dogs and burgers I might surpise you with a 1930 Eversharp or 50s Shaeffer snorkel! Maybe spicey sausage (chourico et al)? Yum. Ern PS If you want your pick of the pens you'll have to come to Mystic Tuesday and visit my stash. Most are quite good daily writers with new latex leakproof bladders, clean straight nibs, etc. (Stop giggling, Gillian...this is old guy PEN(ile) talk. Gillian
HAHAHAHAHAHA. NIBS. Need I say more? Seriously though I think you will have made Kevin's day with such a nice offer . . . he is crazy about Pens! We can't make Mystic this week but if you're offering up Pens, I'll definitely bring in some good sausage for you at the pppo at our place this Friday! JRRousseau
The weather is looking good for Friday, so I may bail out of work and join you. What time are we looking to launch and from where? The causeway? Thanks! -John
Doug
I'd be interested in joining you for the first time. Hope that's OK. Never surfed with a kayak. I guess a dry suit is recommended? Doug
ChrisM
I have the day off and will probably paddle around the area before the surf session. I always wanted to check out Egg Rock, but I always end up staying at the beach and surfing Looking forward to seeing you and Lady Beckwith

The Lady Beckwith seems to be catching on...my kudos to Beth for coming up with it. Speaking of Beth, can she come along? By the way, if you paddle early, shoot me an email as I might be able to join you.
spider
Ok, I'm curious are you talking long boats or short boats ? I came across a web site : nesurfkayakers.com Looked interesting, various types of boats etc. also read with interest one of the threads there on surfng etiquette...primarily the interaction between surfers and kayak surfers. Do you have to deal with any of that or is it a more remote location ?
RogerPollock
I've never had a problem with any boardie, anywhere, ever. Best rule of thumb in surf is, kayakers should always give boardies - and other kayakers, for that matter - as wide a bert as possible - unless you can reliably demonstrate good skills and control. Longboats can be particularly difficult to control in surf . . . unless you're Nigel Somebody. Mostly, I think what boardies see of kayakers, and the bad situations I've seen, is people out there who don't have a clue - a couple kids monking around on a sit on top, a guy and his girlfriend who rented rec boats for the weekend - just loose in the surf, and dangerous to others. So, when they see a kayak, they feel threatened, and I kind of don't blame them.

Deb Millar
Which Nigel? Foster? Dennis? Robinson? Thanks for posting the good advice which we all forget sometimes in our desire to control "that hurtling mass of chaos coming down the wave..." whether we are the hurtling mass or the hurtling mass is coming at us.... Might the lack of eye contact be a good indication that bailing out is indicated. This beginner tends to think that a paddler sufficiently comfy to look around and evaluate surroundings is likely a good paddler and likely in control while those with a very narrow and near focus may not be. Of course I also think of surfing as one of the riskier ways of playing about in a kayak..especially when there is a group milling about. Ed Lawson well, i dunno...YOU could be looking into the vacant, widened so that you can see the whites all around eyes of a person whose face is frozen into a rictus...then again, that eye contact may contribute to your decision making process too! look for a smile, listen for a laugh....and still stay the hell outta the way! and lest anyone not mention it...establish the surf zone right? so you surf in and then circle out and stay clear of the zone on the way out....staying out of eachothers way is important....you probably sorted that out by now given phrases like hurtling masses of chaos and wreaking havoc? have a great time! Gillian
rick and all, very good advice! it brings back one of my favorite memories of surfing last year (if what i do on a wave can be called surfing), thinking i was doing great, came off my wave only to turn around and see a 4 fter. about to break on my head. the last thing i saw was billy coming off the top of that wave and laughing at my impending pounding. i did get a great bongo slide in though!!! and nobody has to know that i may have had a small accident in my boat while being hurled sidways towards the beach.
