alcoons
Someone else led this last year and it was one of my favorite trips. River, creek in marsh, Essex Bay, Cranes Beach (open ocean) and spend one hour on Cranes at the The Annual THE CRANE BEACH SAND BLAST. See: http://www.thetrustees.org/pages/5973_sandblast_2007.cfm Note that trip is not on until confirmed here. Please post interest here or by email. ----------------------------- When: Saturday, August 25. Where: Pavillion Beach (Essex), Fox Creek, Essex Bay, Cranes Beach Timing: Launch at 10 AM. HighTide is at 9:30 AM. This gives us enough water in Fox Creek. Put-in: Pavillion Beach (Essex)- http://www.nspn.org/put_ins.htm Level: Level 3 (3+ possible). Cranes Beach is open ocean and can have current. You should feel comfortable with the distance, have an ocean kayak, and basic wet-exit and self-rescue skills. The other stuff: Trip is not on until confirm here. Bring lunch, plenty of water, sunscreen, etc. This is a private trip so show-and-go rules apply. Seaward side. Covers a great length of the beach. I am thinking 1/2 mile or more in different categories: children, pros, families, etc. We paddled to the end closest to Pavillion and walked back along the works of sand art. Crowded and wonderful tone..great creativity. Then we had a short paddle to finish the day (1 mile?). We had 8 paddlers at the level-3 Private Trip last weekend to Misery. Great to see so many club (and non-club) paddlers getting together. Let's do it again!
alcoons
Can you help? I am out of town on my parent's computer. I think it was the first model that did not use vacuum tubes. Cannot access maps of any kind. Could someone post the distance of this trip and perhaps a map? (http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/)
chetpk
Got to figure out how to get the boat there as son needs my truck to move into his apartment, but sounds like one not to miss so will put a little Yankee ingenuity to work to hopefully make launch time. kate
Al, I went on that trip last year and it was great fun looking at the sand sculptures. Count me in. Kate

I suspect there has been no lack of various NSPN folks paddling about with others, just under the radar mostly. With all the practice sessions, I assume there are a fair number of new paddlers ready/eager to test their sea legs so to speak with trips of this nature assuming reasonable conditions. bob budd
You say "circum(navigation)" but say "ocean side" elsewhere. The tides are not ideal for a circumnavigation of the neck. If you were to return through the marsh in the early afternoon you probably wouldn't be able to get through. A good source is tidesonline.com, there are others. Ed Lawson As a beginner, it would be great if people posted level 2, 2+ trips as well. That being said, I understand that these are Private Trips and not club trips so there is no responsibility or obligation to provide lower-level options. I really have gotten a lot of information from paddling with more experienced people and I think that kind of learning is invaluable. I also think it would give me a gauge for whether I would be ready and could go on some level 3 trips. Shaila

Bob, Crane's Beach is oceanside, but the opposite side of the peninsula is bayside. You are right, there'd be no way to get through the marsh in the afternoon. Fortunately there's no need to return through the marsh - we leave from Pavilion Beach, hit the marsh at high tide, come out at Essex bay and ride the ebb tide out to the tip of Castle Neck. Coming back along Crane's to Pavilion we'll be traveling against the current but that's how it was last year too and it worked well enough. The confusion here may be the map that Gene posted, which shows travel in the opposite direction. If we go counterclockwise, all should be well. Also going around Hog Island since there should be enough water at that time. http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1252338
Roger Turgeon
Al; About what time would expect to be landing back at Pavillion? I'm hoping to fit in a couple hours on the bike, too. Roger Turgeon Night Heron; cedar strip
