And very special thanks to Walter and Bill for helping me keep my head on straight during a bit of "Oh Sh**" paddling around Peach Point on the way back. I may have ended up swimming if it weren't for Walter's "whoo-hoos" and Bill's "chickens don't wear underwear" joke. Even if I didn't laugh at the time, it gave me other things to focus on, and All things considered it was a great paddle, on a great day, spent with great friends.

Thanks to Dan, Deb, Bob and Jerry(?) for the words of encouragement, and to Shaila, Margot, Joan, Mike, Kevin and anyone else I may have forgotten for the upbeat positive companionship. Shalia - I'm taking you up on your offer to do some more practicing soon! :)

I hear you on that O.S. moment at Peach Point. That was the first time Helen and I had been in water that lively. Our small group of three was not with the main NSPN group. I don't know if our flat water rescue practice would have helped us if we needed it, not to mention being pushed onto the rocks. Wake up call.

Otherwise we felt confident and enjoyed the experience.

Thanks again everyone for a great day. It was a combination of good conversation and new challenges! Everyone was very encouraging and I was very happy to have the experience of paddling on some not-so-smooth water in the company of season veterans:) It feels great to test my paddling skills and my kayak did surprisingly well in those kinds of conditions. I came back with another trip under my belt and a couple of great pointers on my forward stroke... which I will be testing out this week.

It is amazing that I just started paddling this year - a great testament to everyone's tips and patience at the practice sessions:)

Thanks again for setting the trip up and I am already excited for the next one!

I'd like others, perhaps more knowledgeable, to weigh in here, but his is my speculation as to why the water was so rough and lumpy off Peaches' Point. At the time we rounded the area the wind was blowing steady WSW at about 10 mi/hr. The tide was moving in to both Salem and Marblehead Harbors which provided for a current, not strong since this was the last 3/3 of the tidal flow. The wind was moving against this current in a polar opposite direction. This of course could account for the moderate wave formation we encountered leaving Salem Harbor, but certainly not as confused and lumpy as what was encountered off Peaches'. My explanation for the difference is that those same wind generated waves now were in addition reflecting back off the land mass of the point and Brown's Island. We all paddled pretty close to land to feel the brunt of that confusion. Had we moved a half mile out into Salem Sound or less that confused sea state would have dissapated consideably. If I'm all wet on this (and I was a little) please reply.
