Great Bay 9/4/06

Five NSPN'ers launched from Chapman's Landing in Statham, NH under partly overcast skies and a steady 10-15 mph wind. Riding the outgoing tide and a strong tailwind, we leisurely paddled 4 miles out into Great Bay in short time. After short break, we headed back via the same route, only this time against the tide and wind, a bit more challenging but definitely cooler with the strong breeze blowing against us. Just short of the railroad bridge, we crossed Great Bay and headed up the Lamprey River almost to the town of New Market before heading back as fatigue started to set in with a few of us older types. The outgoing tide again made easy work of the paddle out of the river and back into Great Bay...where a very low tide forced us to take a "Great Bay Shortcut"....all the way back out into the channel, only to make a U-turn and paddle the same distance in the Swamscott River channel. We slowly slugged our way back up the Swamscott River against a slightly milder wind and a diminished outgoing tide. After 4 hours and 11 miles, all returned safely.

For those who hadn't paddled Great Bay, they saw first hand the tide changes and the vast mud flats at low tide.

I see my timing was off a little for my paddling Great Bay today.

I'll keep an eye on the trips a little closer...sounds like you all had a good day on the water.

I noticed it was plenty windy in the morning but didn't make it back there to paddle till the evening...
