ccarlson
A few of us took advantage of the slop at Nahant this Saturday... great practice venue! http://community.webshots.com/album/553735838oodwqo
bob budd
Pulled onto the beach road and looked out at a grey sky under which cottony lines seemed to roll into the beach. Drove from Swampscott to Lynn and eventually onto the causeway to Nahant where Bill was waiting in the parking lot. A familiar bald head was also and after discovering his lack of pants “Sing” donned Bill’s pants in preparation for the morning’s paddling. Bill headed off to King’s Beach to see if the wind was lower and/or there were fewer kite surfers but the waves turned out to be too small and he returned. While he was gone Carl arrived and the four of us made ready. Poor Rodni took a hard dive on the pavement when a gust pulled her off the rollers. A bit of “snow shield” and a few strips of duct tape and we were all in the water. The next morning the hatch was dry and the patch was easily removed. The repair is another story. For me, the time was spent on predominantly short rides. Often I would be turned broach despite my best efforts and often thereafter I was capsized. I was happy that I failed to roll not once, that is when my helmet did not reach the sand beneath. A few times I rolled up, caught another and was capsized a second time only to find the water too shallow for a roll. Each time it provided an opportunity to reenter by hopping astride and dropping into the ample keyhole cockpit. The high foredeck served to prevent the oncoming water from entering the cockpit if I was quick about it.
Bill Gwynn
It was a good day for a workout. With the 3 foot slop and the 25Kt head wind to get out, we all got our excercise. The rides in were messy, but the occasional 4 footer would come along and some good rides all the way to the beach were had. It's always fun to challenge mother nature in a relatively safe venue. Bob showed us a new roll, I think he called it the "greenland extended paddle bottom pole roll", it looked cool, but didn't work so good It was a fun day, and those kite surfers...damn...they get some BIG air! Thanks for the pics Carl.
EEL
> Bob showed us a new roll, I think he called it >the "greenland extended paddle bottom pole roll", it looked >cool, but didn't work so good Who says there are no advantages to long paddles. Suz
Course if he had a Euro, his low brace would have kept him up:) Or try this one... if he had a Euro such as my magic Mystic Lendal, he would have had the power to avoid going over in the first place:) Really though, the surf zone isn't the best place for a GP. Brian Nystrom
...is wherever you happen to be paddling. ;-)

Hmmm. I suppose that may not be PC, but seems applicable. Ed Lawson
bob budd
At this point in my surfing career I'd rather have the superior self rescue capabilities of the GP. I'm out there for boat handling practice.
