Rob Hazard
I paddled the Annisquam this evening, from Jones River over to Goose Cove culvert to try out my new homemade foam seat in the Explorer. Excellent! The boat's handling is vastly improved. Anyway, launching and loading I probably got bitten a dozen times by the much-feared Greenheads. Annoying, I grant you, but gee willikers, folks, they aren't yellow jackets! And once you're on the water, you're away from them, anyway. It was a lovely evening on the water. That's my story and I'm sticking to it! Cheers, Rob Explorer - quill Seguin - blue and yellow
Gillian
Rob, why do I have the feeling you'd stick to your story even if you were woozy from gaping wounds caused by greenies . . . . Geesh you guys are stubborn!!!!!! By the way, for Christmas I'm getting you your own greenhead hatching farm since you like them so much . . . . Deb Millar
I'm not overly fond of greenheads but, hey, they're around for a roughly a full moon cycle and they're sluggish enough that you can swat 'em. Because they're attracted to dark colors, I wear as much white as possible while on the water and I have a light-colored boat. They do seem, however,to like those black paddles. It's the midgies that seem to last forever....
Gillian
Deb, what the heck is a midgie???

If you spot them before they begin munching. >Because they're attracted to dark colors ... and to people who attract insects in general -- like moi At least the bites do not hurt or itch for too long -- maybe a few minutes. Mosquito bites, however, I find myself sometimes scratching for a day or two. And blackflies... well, let's not even discuss blackflies. Wasn't there a song that went... "blackfiles gonna getcha, even underground." Luckliy, you don't find them much on the water, just in camp. --David.
RogerPollock
This weekend I had a few hounding me all the way out in Gloucester harbor. I guess I REALLY attract them!!
Deb Millar
You know those little teeny-weeny flying gnats that swarm around your head and want to explore its orifices? That, no matter how much you wave your arms around, mutter naughty words and spray OFF!! persist in plagueing you from roughly 6PM until dark? Those are midgies! And they're here from the first warm evenings in June until, well, at least September- 24/7. I hear, though, that that they're far worse in Scotland. Rob Hazard
I am NOT stubborn!!! As I sat with the door open getting into my wetsuit, the car quickly filled with Greenheads. But most of them didn't seem interested in me at all; rather, they were buzzing inside the windows, trying to get out! My green Subaru makes a great Greenhead trap! I opened the windows and off they went. (...am NOT!)
Gillian
Rob, I will give you 20 bucks if you admit you hate greenheads.
