Low water was not the issue at Umbagog

Early Saturday afternoon we 8 weekend kayak campers gathered at the "Clubhouse North" chez Peter B's snug though still under construction log house over looking Lake Umbagog. Natalia and I had spent Friday night there while Anne and Fred were at the campground testing their new tent. No leaks! Dan, Linda, Glen and Bethany drove up on Saturday morning.

I checked the weather on my VHF and learned 4-6" of rain were expected on Saturday, with more on Sunday. The list of flood warnings went on, and on, and on.

Being in favor of consensus decision-making, I put forth our options:

Plan A: Load kayaks in a total downpour and launch from the campground and paddle about 7 miles to our campsites and set up tents in a total downpour.

Plan B: Load kayaks in a total downpour and launch from above the Errol dam and paddle about 40 minutes up the Androscoggin to our campsites and set up tents in a total downpour.

Plan C: Set up camp in a total downpour at vacant sites in the campground and do day paddles from there in the rain.

Plan D offered by Peter: Stay inside, hang out, eat and crash there.

So I asked, does anyone want to paddle? The answers were:

NO.

NO.

NO.

NO.

NO.

NO.

NO.

Story telling commenced.

Snacks and drinks were set out.

Dinner was prepared.

The table was set.

Eating ensued.

A pause.

Eating resumed.

Dishes were washed.

Story telling resumed.

Beds were assigned and thermarests inflated.

Sleep to the sound of rain pelting the windows and roof.

Awakening.

Coffee on.

Cooking commenced.

The table was set.

Eating ensued.

A pause.

Eating resumed.

Dishes were washed.

Observation that the rain had stopped.

Observation that the wind had picked up.

Observation of no interest in paddling.

Dry (!) gear was loaded.

Lots of hugs.

Posing for the group pictures.

Head home a day early.

A good time was had by all. Leaves were seen by all. Moose were seen by some.

Liz summed up the weekend nicely.

We took our kayaks out for a ride to see the foliage!

We turned the return trip into a "paddling location expedition" checking out Aziscohos,Rangeley,Mooselookmeguntic and Richardson.

And what a PPO!(Postponed Paddle Pigout)
