Rick crangle
Martha’s Vineyard circumnavigation, Rick Stoehrer and Rick Crangle. First day 17.5 nm didn’t see anything, saw MV once for a few minutes. Second day didn’t see anything until noon. Traveled 41.75 nm, took a couple of hours to stop the world from moving up and down 4,5 feet every 8 seconds. Ten hours of paddling no real help from the tides, just a following sea crossing from Gay Head to Woods Hole.
binks
good effort on the big second day - that's an impressive distance.

rick stoehrer
as far as i ever care to paddle in a single day. coupla notes: - fog is disorienting. fog with a fast current is very disorienting and both those things with boat traffic will keep a radio handy. - wasque point has a nice rip; we hit it at ebb, don't know if it's there all the time or just on the ebb. - the back side of MV is one loooong featureless dumping beach - no pleasant place to land. we had fairly benign conditions (sw wind at 10-15 a few gusts higher with smallish 3-4 foot swells) and would have been a challenge on a bigger day - pack more water. i ran out around the NE end of naushon island and was not happy about it. - pack less of everything else...there's is no godly reason to bring all the *^%** i have in my boat. you don't need spare clothes (hypothermia kit excluded of course), you don't need anything that doesn't perform dual purpose. brought too many clothes, too much food, too much too much! djlewis
How much water did you wish you had brought?
rick stoehrer
short answer - more. the hydration bag i've used for years (a big kelty that holds a coupla gallons) decided that this was the weekend it was going to slow leak into my front hatch....so....rather than having a full bladder on my back for wednesday, i was short and had to go with about 50 oz - tops, which is normally more than enough but this was a whole day affair and it was work. i figure a gallon a day anyway and then maybe half a gallon more to be on the safe side for warm weather/camping. so for 2 days, 2.5 gallons woulda been great...even though the bladder won't hold that much, it woulda been nice to have been able to stop, refill and paddle on my merry way. anyways, need a new water bag.
