6/25/2005- MIKCO- Peaks Island and Outer Green Race Day

The race day event was probably better than ever ? A very nice hot day, but cool out on the water. I'm not sure how those in the sea kayaks found it, but conditions were big enough to make it interesting for me in a surfski. The hot air over the cold water formed a mist that made it hard to see Outer Green from Ram Ledge. There was a large group of club members there and a few other unaffiliated paddlers.

it was a beautiful day! you guys in the ski's flew...that swell was nice i would think in the surf ski?

the old school nordkapp (which i was dissuaded from using) was indeed an instrument of extreme torture and i was numb from the hips down (and a strong argument could be made from the neck up) and after circling cushing and going out to ram...paddled back gingerly - not as much fun as you'd think. and then once i got back to the beach? yeah, thought i'd drown trying to get out of that ^%&(*(( thing. probably a great boat for one that fits in it...but boy, was that ever not me!

overall a great day for paddling and a good day for charities - tom said they raised over $500 for the MMA and PILP charities that get all of the entrance fee's. it was a win-win!

It was good to see the ski's up at the race. I thought rounding Junk 'O' Pork was a little funky near the shore. I cut it too close and had to scurry over some swells and rocks. I assume you guys went wide.

Good day, good race and a very sound sleep that night.

David, full results from Tom below. A couple of great races:

Maine Island Kayak Co, June 28, 2005

Peaks Island and Outer Green Race Results

Conditions. Air temp rose to 95 F. Water temp 56 F. Portland Buoy AM report: winds SSW 10-12 kn. Waves 2 ft every 6 seconds. Small craft advisory for seas. High Tide: 13:48 at 11.3 ft. Max flood ~ 1kn btw Ram Light and Outer Green. Sunny and hot with cool mist over the water.

Ê

Charts. NOAA Chart Portland Harbor and Vicinity 13292 (covers whole course) or Casco Bay 13290 (for larger coverage) or Waterproof Charts #101e.

Donations. $590 was raised for Marine Mammal Lifeline and the Peaks Island Land Preserve. Thanks racers.

Outer Green Race. This 11 mile offshore course requires use of racerÍs seamanship with its open ocean crossings, tides and currents and large boat traffic so it is for the committed, competent ocean paddler. Course: South from MIKCo's boathouse on Peaks Island, cross Whitehead Passage, down West side of Cushing Island, around South end of Cushing opposite Portland Head Light. Racers had to decide whether to cut around or between Ram Island and the light on Ram Ledge on the way out to Junk of Pork and Outer Green islands. Racers had to decide how close to cut the corner in the surf around Junk of Pork. Some racers saw more ledge than others, some decided to cool off while out there, several took advantage of their skills in surf and gained significant time. Then its back toward the mainland. Racers had to decipher the current and wave shape to use or avoid the tidal currents and light swell, returning up Hussey Sound around the North end of Peaks ? if they could figure out where to aim their bows. Racers used very different return routes some + mile apart with very different results. The last 1 mile runs down the NW side of Peaks and finishes at the MIKCo boathouse.

Outer Green Results: Start time noon. Distance 12 miles.

Except for the first 5 boats all others were traditional touring kayaks. The good conditions made seamanship and a sea worthy boat more important than flat water speed.

Peaks Round-the-Island Race. Its about 5+ miles around Peaks Island, and its eastern side is open to the Gulf of Maine, and subject to the ocean's swells and lumpiness. Its good, clean fun and been well received these last many years. Some tide, current and swell to work with.

Sounds neat. Congratulations to winners especially, but actually to everybody for what sounds like a great day on the water. (I was a little farther north having my own fun with some NSPNers and others ;-)
