on the NICE days, anyways...

ignoring the sage advice of less than three there shall never be, i tempted fate and paddled out to jewell island to camp this week.

launched from wilson park (take a R at the wooden statue on rte 1 in freeport and follow the signs - can't miss it) and headed against the max flood and a head wind....FABULOUS. anyways, out past mosier, over to stockman, down between slave and ministerial to the gap between cliff and jewell. camped on the oaks site overlooking cliff and peering sw down towards portland.

thursday was really not such a nice morning...foggy as hell; i paddled around the island once and then back to the camp for a day of relaxed reading....ah, that's nice. the day eventually cleared and it was a lovely afternoon with the sun warm and golden after a grey day. tom and a buddy of his headed over with a 6 pack and three of the kids...they roamed the island, discovering for themselves just how amazing casco bay is while the adults chatted and drank ice cold beverages....we eventually went and rounded them up...they all headed off into the setting sun and i hit the sack early.

up early today, packed and repacked...got it to my liking and headed off around jewell again and then over the top of cliff, hit the south of bangs and then over to crow. took a look around at the great little hut that MITA has all set up for those rainy weekends...quite nice. up along chebeague and then over the top of mosier back the put in. the path today was great - the SW winds blowing for a few days had some nice swells running my way - free ride!

only note is that the whole point of the trip of course was to camp, right? almost makes you think i woulda remembered my damn sleeping bag! well, i got a little excited and realized half way to maine (some would argue half way to late, yes?) that i had forgot it! paddled over and camped anyways...what the hell, i always pack the SAME emergency ditch stuff and that includes warm gear...what better way to put it to the test? it wasn't as comfy as my nice warm bag, but serviceable. good to know.

on the whole, a nice few days!
