rick stoehrer
yesterday with edges of conciousness stirred by the mournful sound of a fog horn in the distance....i knew what to expect before i even opened my eyes.... got to pavillion and it was so thick that from the parking lot, the shore had disappeared and so set an angle to cross to plum island against the full ebb....and had to correct as we passed within sight of the daymaker....hmmm, it was running pretty good. the sound of the ebb over the sand bar was ominous...it always is when you can only hear and can't see the surf....so we skirted the edge of the point...out and around and came upon the southern set of rocks... the fog had swirled enough so that within our 100 foot spehere of sight, we could see the 3 footers breaking in a confusion off the southern set...we worried a bit about janis and so paddled off that point a ways and then headed back in....foolish we were, she handled it with customary aplomb.... as we headed N towards that second jetty of stone, the mist relented abit and we could see the nice swells coming into that sandy shore in beautiful sets....and so why not play?...hell, we weren't going to see anything so why not make the most of it? we surfed and played in between the hues.....the slate gray, white capped waves below and the ephemeral mist above, with cold sea water and rain smacking your cheeks as you hurtle down a wave face. eveything went to reinforce playing in a cold, steel place. and eventually with lunch from shore as we looked W towards essex, it cleared briefly and we could see the mist hanging in the low hills and tree's....briefly...and then the fog settled back in around us like a blanket snugged up in winter. lunch done, we launched, played a bit more in an offshore break with some nice 5 footers...an ill timed and ill tempered wave broke right behind me....and i knew when i heard the foam pile behind me that nothing good could come of it....and so was tossed and bongo'd and just held on til it decided it was done...eventually it spit me out and i blew the brine from my nose and paddled back out to catch the next one. eventually we headed back S.....the swells brought us to Crane's rapidly and we rolled, and sculled and just didn't want to get off the water....ice cream headaches all aeound. but everything ends, even the good things and so we rode the incoming tide back the straight shot up Cranes to the take out... grand way to spend a day where you mostly couldn't see too far.
