Walter
Saturday, April 16, 2005, with taxes all mailed, a group of paddlers, eleven colorful kayaks and twelve people left the shores of the mighty Joes Creek (aka Walker Creek) at 10:00 AM on the going tide. The sky was clear with the sun welcoming the paddlers into its paradise of open waters, warm air and calm seas. We paddled out the Essex River, taking a right at the mouth of the river, continuing along Coffins Beach, landing to the right of the Annisquam Light for some refreshments and Werner’s Congo Bars which he indicated he was up since 5:00AM making. After lunch we put in and paddled toward Lanes Cove as the group was looking to get some more distance in and for a little action from the water, but it was a serene day. After some made a pit stop at Plum Cove we continued on back towards Coffins Beach, landing on the outside of Cranes for some apples, and trail mix. What was that in the water a seal? No! It was David Mooradd floating in the Essex River as he tested his dry suit, which he found dry! We culminated the trip by entering the Essex River, on the incoming tide, paddling along Cranes, headed between Cross Island and Great Bank with Hog Island in the distance. Hog Island is were the movie “The Crucible" was filmed. Out the Essex River on the Cross Island side, in the back eddies, as the tide was coming in, and landed back at Conomo in Joes Creek (aka Walker Creek) side at 3:00 PM ish. Distance paddled 11NM approx. Some practiced there rolling. You have to love those ice cream headaches. Bill and Werner got the opportunity to roll a tandem, which Lynn and Mikael were kind enough to lend them. Pictures can be seen at; http://mysite.verizon.net/amaruk/Album9.htm Thank you Mikael and Lynn. http://www.kayakpics.com/gallery/041605 Thank you Bill Gwynn. I would like to thank all that participated in this SNG and made this a memorable event. I would like to thank Bill Gwynn and Werner Maas for there assistance in this trip as they were the eyes in back and on the side of the group. wernermaas
Walter, thanks for organizing this SNG, it sure turned out to be a beautiful day. I noticed that some of the drysuits smelled suspiciously like mothballs, I'm glad for all of those who had their first day on the water. Let's do it again sometime soon, Werner
