Brad Gwynn launched from the Winthrop public ramp at 9AM, choosing a longer route than from the planned put-in on Deer Island. Destination: Lovell Island.

The South:

Mark Stephens launched from Windmill Point in Hull at 10:10AM. Destination: Lovell Island.

At 10:25AM Brad hailed Mark on the VHF as Mark crossed The Narrows from Georges Island to the boat dock on Lovell's. NSPN North had made contact with NSPN south.

Exciting, huh?

We had a nice tour of the outer harbor islands, paddling with the seals, then landed on Little Brewster for lunch and so Brad could check out Boston Light. We had hoped for a tour from the lightkeeper, but the island was deserted. We paddled down the length of Brewster Spit and parted ways at its southern tip. A south wind was picking up, which made my shorter paddle back to Hull Gut and Windmill Point a bit of a slog, while Brad was able to catch a nice ride back across the President Roads as the wind started to roar.

After loading up, I sat in my truck for a bit, drinking hot chocolate and monitoring VHF 16 just in case. My truck was rocking back and forth in the gusts and I thought of Brad whooping it up out there, solo.

Lucky bastard!

Winthrop Boat Ramp was chosen over the Deer Island launch because the latter involves walking through was likely snow/ice where the former is a boat ramp. The small increase in time/distance on the water was preferred to the difficulty of navigating through the snow with boats in hand/on shoulder.
