Clockwise circumnav of Monomoy -- Saturday 7/28

The tides and currents are quite favorable for an early AM launch from Morris Island. The main question is whether the channel is open again from the ocean side to inside south beach. The Google satellite image kinda looks ok, but I don't know the date and/or tide on it. Anybody know? If not, can you portage? (http://tinyurl.com/2qsume)

Assuming you can get through one way or another, it's about 19nm, but with the strong tail current all the way around the southern tip, will feel more like 16-17. The seals were out in force at the southern tip last year, and followed us all the way around. Traffic at that hour onto the Cape (say 6:30 AM at the Sagamore) should be fine.

Anybody interested?

David,

I'm down in Cape Cod this week. So I hope I can join you folks for this trip. I was with the Charles River group last Sunday for the Monomoy Island trip, launching from the Fox Hill Rd in Pleasant Bay, but we scuttled the mission after running into heavy breaking wave at the mouth of the newly breached Nauset Beach. So I'm anxious to try it again with a different route. Please let me know the put-in point and time.

May I suggest that we can all meet at the parking lot of the Burger King/Dunkin Donut stop, right off the Exit 6 on Rt 6, for a cup of coffee and restroom facility before continuing onto Chatham?

We figure to launch at 8:30 AM from Morris Island Causeway, here...

Funny you should mention heavy breaking surf on the eastern side of the barrier. That could happen to us as we come off the portage (yes, portage) around the former gap between South Beach and South Monomoy Island... roughly here...

(just a guess based on outdated imagery -- we'll have to scout it when we get there; the FWS manager says it's a 150 yard portage).

The present swell forecast is 2' every 5 sec from the SSE, so it will probably be OK to re-launch there.

And now that I've discussed what might be or not be, I need to reiterate that this is a private trip, aka SnG... everybody welcome, but you are responsible for your own decisions.

Hi David,

Boy, I 'd really like to come along, but alas am busy Saturday. For the record, would you expect this to be a 2.5 or 3 paddle? Have fun, and see ya Tuesday. Ern

Hi, Ernie:

In terms of the NSPN rating system, it's definitely 3+ or 4, based on mileage alone (19 nm with a good tail current in places). See...

http://www.nspn.org/play-trip-levels.html

Conditions depend on, well, conditions on that day. Nothing specific planned such as surf, difficult current, etc. The pace will probably be middling, maybe 3.5-4 kts, but that will depend on the group.
