Snapdragon backband

I'd like to replace the backband in my NDK Explorer HV with a Snapdragon backband 2. Anyone have any experience with this? I have two questions with which I need help. First, the backband that is in there now is attached to the sides of the boat with two screws and nuts. If I take those off do I need, for example, sealant or new lock nuts when I attach the new backband? Also, the band comes with very thick shockcord, and I wondering how to secure that. Many thanks for any help you can give me.

The standard NDK backband attachment is to the seat supports, not the hull. So there is no need to seal the bolt: just unbolt the old backband, slip on the new backband and retighten the bolt.

As for the bungie, most Explorers have a small stainless steel loop bolted to the bulkhead behind the seat. Just clip or tie the bungie for the new backband to it. If for some reason it is missing, pick up one at a marine store (such as West Marine) with some stainless bolts and nuts. In this case you might want to put a bit of sealant on the bolt, but the water leakage is negligible if you don't.

Thanks Scott, but there is no seat in my boat. I use a removable foam seat, which I am in the process of replacing with a custom foam seat. The backband attaches directly to the top of the hull just outside the combing.

It seems to me that you have a choice of two resolutions to your (very small) problem:

(i) Snapdragon make what think is the best of the after-market backbands and because it is built around a solid, nylon (?) band you will find it requires no support in the middle (Not doubting your wisdom, Scott). All you need do is bolt up the two ends after deciding on suitable positioning for your particular back! That nylon strip is already plentifully drilled.

(ii) You could very easily build yourself a foam backrest to match your seat and glue it into position -- permanent solution! (Brian Nystrom has a website with photos galore of just this sort of fitting-out...)
