2006/2007 Pool Sessions

Recommended Posts

Well, the cold water is coming whether we like it or not. To that end, thoughts have begun to turn towards pool sessions so now we are looking for site ideas. I will be coordinating pool sessions this year and I am posting now to solicit ideas for sites. Last year, we consistently used Ipswich, Beverly, and Chinatown. If you have other ideas for site, let me know. Perhaps you know of a great pool that we haven't heard of yet; if so, let me know!

I'm also looking for people who might want to act as pool registrars for each site. This is a great way to help out the club and give back to it. So if you might be interested, let me know!

I will monitor this thread until Tuesday (9/26) so please post your site ideas / willingness to act as registrar here.

Many, many people clamor for these sessions so let's see those same people get involved!

I'll toss in a vote for the Brookline High School pools (only ~6 minutes from our house). Very nice pools -- a normal 25 yd, 5 or 6 lane lap pool, a smaller 12 ft deep diving well, and a shallow pool that would be good for teaching. The only drawback was limited parking if you hit a student activity night, last year's session was a school dance.

For those who are proposing a new pool location it would help Kevin/the club if you would make first contact with the pool "officials" to determine if they would provide such services, perhaps get a cost estimate, etc.

For those who are willing to be registrar the abilities required are not of the paddling variety. You need to be able to provide the various administrative functions to sign up and collect fees from attendees. You need to recruit spotters to provide assistance and/or instruction. As a registrar you can assume a spotters roll.

As a registrar you are not required to keep an eye on anyone or provide assistance or even stay through the session itself, though you can elect to do so as your abilities and desires allow. You do not have a place in the pool, as the number of attendees is maximized for pool size and attendee count, but you may find as the session goes on that one or more get tired and space opens up. You do need to be there to sign in participants (or appoint a proxy). Other attendees will provide spotting and/or instruction to some extent on break, etc. but they will be paying customers so its best if you can sign up spotters.

Ralph, et al - I lined up the Brookline Pool for last year's single session. Threading long boats through that small lobby was not the easiest, but compared to some places, I guess it wasn't that bad. In any case, I think the Brookline Pool may be under renovation right now, but will check.

The Portsmouth, NH YMCA might be a good addition to the

roster of pool session venues. Alex L. ran some sessions there a few years ago. Great pool, good access, parking etc. It would also serve club members in the southern NH/Newburyport/Portsmouth area.

The MIT pool is the most gorgeous deep water Olympic-sized pool. I contacted them two years ago for the club and you rent it by the lane. They also have a more shallow pool. I think it was going to end up being a little more than we pay some places, but is also super nice. If not rented regularly, it might be nice to have the deep water for certain events or activities. It's also a nice place to watch demos.

One of the colleges in Waltham I remember was also an option. Maybe someone else remembers more on that.

Chinatown always has rocked.

I getting the boats in was certainly not any harder than Chinatown, Beverly, or Ipswich, and may have been the easiest. Inside there is more pool room (more kayakers can fit) than these other three pools. We just need to find enough members who want to come to Brookline to fill the session.

Any thought to using some sessions to recruit or introduce kayaking to non-members? I think some pools might be more receptive to our using the facilities if we also included a way for them to have their own members attend an intro session or at the least get those kayakers that are not (yet) members of NSPN to attend.

One of my other hobbies is amateur rocketry and we found that towns felt no incentive to allow our using their parks for our activities until we found a way to include town members in some of the launches. Worked really well in several cases.

Of course it is different with kayaking, liability rules, etc. so this may not be viable...

I thought I would mention the Newburyport YWCA...it's has easy access and I have been there for pool sessions before..thought it was a very nice pool and area... with doors that open directly to the parking lot for easy transport of kayaks
