kevinfre
Can anyone suggest a good instructional DVD for basic strokes? I'm especially interested in improving my reverse and draw strokes.I'm sure I could just google this and find a zillion results, but some personal recommendations would help. Thanks,Kevin

djlewis
>Can anyone suggest a good instructional DVD for basic >strokes? I'm especially interested in improving my reverse >and draw strokes. Come by Mystic this afternoon (or any practice session, or catch someone at a paddle), and we can show you real quickly how to improve both those strokes and others. I haven't surveyed the DVD "literature" exhaustively, but for reverse in particular the secrets and tricks... errr... techniques... are more oral tradition at this point than written or filmed. That said, here are some ideas, gleaned from googling "kayak reverse"... http://www.ehow.com/how_9919_reverse-stroke-sea.html http://www.buzzle.com/editorials/3-7-2005-66779.asp http://www.atlantickayaktours.com/pages/Ex...pulsion-2.shtml http://www.seapaddler.co.uk/Reverse%20Paddling.htm http://www.useakayak.org/reflec_ignrdrevrstrok_3_03.html http://www.useakayak.org/supportive_revrs_sweep.html As you'll see there are a number of "styles" and a lot of conflicitng advice. IMHO, the last two, by Wayne Horodowich, come the closest to what I understand as good practice, but are still only part of the story. (I see Brian's recommended Nigel Foster's videos. I haven't looked at that one, but recalling what I've seen Foster teach in person, it's similar to Horodowich's advice... and good stuff.) --David. Mel Rice
The problem with many DVDs is that many showcase techniques that are out-of-date. The 3rd volume in Nigel Foster's series is good and should help you with those strokes you mentioned.Cheers,Mel
