July 18, 200618 yr Jeez, you guys are scarin' me! How localized are these bacterial concentrations? Are there sewage outfalls right next to the individual beaches? Or we paddling through diluted sewage all the way from Boston to Portsmouth?
July 18, 200618 yr Author Rob,Don't really think it's a cause for fear, just caution. I would just suggest rolling a bit further off shore for the time being. I paddled from Marblehead to Salem and back yesterday and rolled only where the water at least looked clean (although that's no guarantee). I also made sure I used nose clips. Besides, we paddle with all manner of creatures on the water and I think the motorboaters are much more dangerous
July 18, 200618 yr Even when the bacteria counts are low, the inner harbours are rife with stink boat pollutants. What this means is that you should avoid extended contact with the water near the beach, not the ocean in general. As noted elsewhere unprecedented rains have caused these closings.
