Bob H Posted November 1 Posted November 1 7 of us arrived by 9:30 and set out from the Ordione boat launch at 10. The forecast was calling for winds up to 10 mph and temps in the mid 70's - both were accurate. We headed up through Little Harbor where Jim gave us a history lesson on one of the islands and we searched for the location of the old salt water pool by the Wentworth Hotel. Continueing on we saw 5 great herons on one of the small islands just south of Goat Island as we made our way to 4 Tree island where we stopped to make use of the rest rooms. From here we crossed the Piscataqua River over to Seavey Island where we got to see a submarine up close. Heading down river we entered Pepperrell Cove and made our way to Fishing Island for lunch. While there we saw a couple of sunfish sail boats playing in the river, a large NOAA ship, and two largo cargo ships with tugs passing each other . But that was most of the boat traffic we saw all day. After lunch 3 of the group that had hot dates for Halloween, broke off and headed back, while 4 of continue along the coast of Gerrish Island pase Fort Foster and around to a small beach just south of Sisters Point were we stopped for a snack. Off again we headed south into the very welcomed breeze - it was warm. We caught the attention of a seal that watched us for a long time. Headed back we decided to stop at Whaleback Light and go ashore and see it up close - well worth the effort to do so. From there we headed back to the launch where we were surprised and happy to not see the boot sucking mud we had expected. Great day on the water - hard to believe it was the end of October and not Aug/Sep. 11 NM paddle. Quote

Paul Sylvester Posted November 5 Posted November 5 I am surprised the Navy security let you get that close to Seavey Island and any sub. The GPS track looks very close... Did you see the patrol boat with the deck mounted 50 caliber machine gun? Quote

While I am sure that "they" kept and eye on us, the patrol boat must have deemed us a non risk as it appeared to go into dock behnd the sub that we were checking out. We were maybe 150 yards from the sub being worked on as we passed by. Saw and have seen fishing, pleasure, and sailing boats closer on a regular basis. Now on the back side of the island they do have signs posted on shore suggesting that you do not attempt to land, warning you that "Lethal Force is Authorized" Quote
