Merrimack River pollution

Recommended Posts

I'm sure everyone is aware of this, but just in case be mindful of paddling in the Merrimack/Joppa Flats for a while. The flooding caused a sewer pipe in Haverhill to burst dumping over 35 million gallons/day of sewage into the river. It will take to some before the river can get rid of that amount of pollution. Take extra care if you stop at any point along the shore. A Haverhill city official stated that the discharge should be stopped by tonight, but it's been going on for at least a couple of days.

So if you want to practice your roll, don't do it at Joppa Flats :(
