There will be some pretty BIG waves (by New England standards) for this weekend. I noticed that the "beginners' class" is on Saturday, coinciding with the BIGGEST waves of this weekend. If this class is going to happen, go down south of Plymouth, into the "elbow" of the Cape to do the class. The waves will be coming out of the SE early part of Saturday. The Cape will offer protection and you'll get much smaller refracted waves down there.

Sunday, Nahant should still be offering at least waist plus (could be even bigger) easterly component waves. That would be a good place to do the more advance class. Forgiving beach and you won't run into many surfers there.

Good luck, have fun.

"Armpit", "elbow", "behind the knee", whatever the term, you want to be inside the the Bay, Plymouth or south, where the Cape will block direct SE waves/swells. The waves will find their way around P-town but will diminish in size as they head to the southern part of the Bay.

I dare say you don't want to be surfing a long boat on some of the east facing breaks that are open to the ocean this Saturday...

Sing,

Do you have a particular beach in mind? I don't know that area at all. Don't even have a chart and due to the move, I don't have access to any of my kayak books.

For easy surfing beaches down there, IMHO, are either Scusset Beach just north of the Cape Cod Canal, which has east/northeast exposure, or further down, Sandy Neck in Barnstable which has north exposure. Sandy Neck can be accessed from several launch spots in Barnstable Harbor, but requires a paddle out through the harbor to get to the outside.

I'm probably headed to Scusset today or tomorrow to check it out myself for surf conditions. If Nigel is free tomorrow, maybe we can hook up and I can show him the South Shore surf spots.
