In a nutshell, if see both a green and red light at the same time on the water at night, you are in serious danger of getting run down.

Lots of graphics on my blog that show the lighting patterns of powerboats at night, including fishing vessels. Also pointers on how to make a VHF radio securite call ("say cure ee tay") at night or in fog.

Also lots of related posts on what to look for when buying a VHF radio. And links to VHF radio distress calls recorded by the Coast Guard.

Everything's on my blog.

Below: the lighting pattern of a large powerboat. Cross its bow assuming its green or red light mark the end of its bow and you are in for a nasty surprise.
