There's a continuing decrease of interest in touring sea kayaks. I used to see groups almost every weekend around the Elizaeths; saw one last year, nd none so far this year. Theere's a thread somewhere here on the decrease in sea kayaker numbers.

Just looking up at the sky can be helpful, too. I make it a point to ask folks on the water about the weather, environment, etc, and am a bit dismayed at how often they pull out their cellphone to answer questions like 'Which way is current going now?', or 'Is that thunderhead likely to hit us?'

IMHO, compared to an Explorer, a Surf feels tubby but more maneuverable. It's also at least a 1/2 knot slower than the Explorer with comparable effort. Handier in very shorrt confused chop, but harder to surf downwind and in larger tideraces.

There've been numerous recent (July '23) reports of Man O'war jellyfish in S NE waters, and current southerly winds are likely to push them closer to shore. Ones' likelihood of encountering them when paddling in S New England for the next few weeks is higher than usual.
