  1. The Weather Gods…or perhaps it's the Weather Bunny - NOT smiling on us.  Saturday forecast is for sustained winds over 17 gusting to 30  So, unless there's a miracle from on high, or from the rabbit burrow below, I think we can count on Saturday being a NO GO.

We're going to see what Sunday holds (when I know some folks aren't available)…but it's not looking terribly promising.  We'll update tomorrow.

Perhaps we should organize an Easter egg hunt somewhere, or a nice brunch on Saturday if we get shut out?

  2. Janet Lorang and I will be organizing this year’s traditional NSPN Easter Bunny Plunge.  Easter is early this year, but hopefully the Bunny in charge of weather will bless us with good conditions.  We hope to be able to get out (and get wet…as in Plunge!) on the day before Easter (or possibly Easter Sunday itself if conditions markedly better).

So find your rabbit ears, think about what chocolate or jelly beans you might want to share with the group, clear your calendars and save the date!

Feel free to express interest here…and we’ll plan to post formal trip notice the week of - when we can see the weather forecast.

  3. Sorry, I mostly only know the pictures that I'm in, or the really obvious one, or the big private island owned by the family of a long-time friend (that is nice enough to let us ordinary mortals land on a small portion of its Caribbean shores…). So, Nancy, lead on!

What a fun and delicious evening. Sue, thanks so much for organizing and bringing a carful of party gear. And to everyone: it was great to see and chat with you and you are all fabulous cooks!!

    What she said!

It was a really great time…good food, friends and convo!  Those of you not able to make it, you were missed…and you missed an excellent evening!

  5. Thanks for the scary account, Joe.  You sure got my attention.  Practice, practice, practice.  I'd probably be better off spending pool time extracting myself from my boat various ways than "working on my roll,” which at this stage of the game will likely never be any form of reliable.

  6. Fifteen of us celebrated the New Year with the now traditional paddle in Boston Inner Harbor.  We gathered at the Little Mystic all season boat ramp in Charlestown, posed for a photo, then launched under cloudier-than-forecast skies

We paddled out under the Tobin Bridge,

then paddled along the many piers lining the harbor.  Seems every time I've done this paddle, there's been the same very large catamaran boat docked.  Always thought…What would it be like to paddle under it….but never did.  Until this time, where the likelihood of an unexpected launch seemed pretty low.

We then had the opportunity to address, if not ultimately answer, the burning question: How many kayaks long is the USS Cassin Young?

After a cold stop for a quick lunch in Fort Point Channel, where most of us stayed in our boats  in a largely futile attempt to stay at least marginally warmer, we kept on to the Institute of Contemporary Arts, where we gathered up for a two pod crossing of the harbor over to the Nantucket Lightship in East Boston.

Finally, we paddled along the increasingly gentrified shore of East Boston, which does feature the best views of downtown Boston across the water

until we crossed over again and headed back down the Little Mystic to where we'd started.

It was a beautiful, if colder than a number of us had anticipated, day.  But the sky finally cleared after lunch and those of us who'd been cold warmed up and probably could have continued on longer than we did.

Many thanks to David, Joe, Bill, Mike, Janet, Stephanie, Jeff, Nick, Ali, John, Barb, Diane, Jane, Eran, and Ricardo for a really fun start to 2024!

  7. I'm gratified by all the interest shown in welcoming in the New Year with what will be the 4th Annual such NSPN trip (including New Years Eve Day paddles, required when weather wouldn't cooperate for January 1) in the Boston Inner Harbor.  Barring a drastic change in the weather, the trip is on for New Years Day!  We will meet at the all tide ramp at the Little Mystic River boat ramp in Charlestown by 10 am at the latest;  earlier if you know you're someone who needs more time to get organized.  We will plan to launch at 10:30.

It will be January, so by definition a cold water paddle, so everyone will be required to be wearing a drysuit and sprayskirt (as well as other usual gear such as pfd).  While the water is generally very calm where we'll be paddling, everyone needs to be dressed for immersion.   Boats need decklines and bulkheads.  If you have a marine radio, pls bring it.

We will paddle down the Little Mystic and under the Tobin Bridge, then turn right and paddle along the docks and piers, past the USS Constitutiion and the TD Garden and ultimately the Harbor Walk, where we'll have a chance to give New Years greetings to folks strolling on land.  We'll likely paddle a leisurely 8-10 nm and be off the water by mid afternoon, well before it gets dark.

(If the forecast changes dramatically, there is the option to switch the paddle to New Years Eve day, but at this point that doesn't look likely.)

Looking forward to seeing as many folks as can make it!

  8. Save the date(s)!  I'm hoping the Weather Gods will cooperate for a club paddle in Boston Inner Harbor on either New Year's Eve Day or New Year's Day.  We will launch from the Little Mystic all tide ramp in Charlestown, which has plenty of free parking.  It's fun to celebrate either the end of the old or beginning of the new year by paddling as close to the Harbor Walk as we can and chatting with on-land folks enjoying the day as well.  I'm posting this now so folks can pencil it in if interested.  Next week, we'll check out the forecast and decide which day looks better.  The super-long-range forecast looks promising, so…fingers crossed!  To gauge tentative interest or all-else-being-equal day preference, feel free to weigh in below.  (This won't count as formal sign-up.)

  9. Another winter reading suggestion.  I got cold just reading it!  The title is pretty self-explanatory as to content.
