  1. Interested! Would be fun to try!
  2. Phil & I are in. Happy to join this group and/or assist on any of the other levels as needed. We are also in for the potluck and will bring something good to eat-category/food tbd. Let us know if there is a specific category light on offerings! Looking forward to it!
  3. @prudencebwell it certainly would be unfortunate if this is the first time it is moved given our new location!!! ?

Phil and I are in! Parking reserved, too!
  5. Thanks for sharing your journey with us, Pru! Envious of your amazing trip!
  6. The zipper on the Idol is still a work in progress... The overall fit of the suit is more comfortable, and I like being able to put on the top at the last minute and take it off quickly on warmer days. As Suz indicated, it takes some fidgeting to figure out how to line up the zipper, and it needs to be tightened all the way down. Once I figured out both of these things, I've stayed dry. But I learned the hard way and got wet a couple time first...
  7. I am very proud of both of you! And I still want to be President of the Pru and Cathy for 5* Club!
  8. Gene was one of the first people Phil and I met when we joined NSPN. He was always welcoming and kind to us. I'll miss his sharp wit and outspoken nature. RIP.
  9. Karen, I agree you really need to try it on to make sure it fits. Like David, I am a fan of the Sweet Strutter Helmet. It fits me better than any of the other I tried while also providing the best protection...
  10. Phil mentioned seeing or hearing about this article recently, so he may know the source. I prefer the "position of greatest usefulness" philosophy. In general, I prefer to lead from the side or moving back and forth within the group. That being said, there are times when as the leader, you might need to take the lead at the front-to check out a potential hazard, etc... But often it's much easier to see and keep track of the group from the side or even the rear...
  11. Highly recommend doing it with Todd Wright and Carl Ladd if they have one planned. Not sure how others structure, but they typically set up so there's a day of assessing your personal skills, and then the rest of the assessment is teaching practice students (as opposed to your peers/other candidates.). I really like this method since it makes it more authentic.
  12. Congrats! I am so happy for both of you, and Tim Gleason, too. I know how hard you worked to get to this.
  13. Congrats to both Rob and Matt!
  14. Pru, you have such an amazing gift of making the reader feel like they are right by your side on your journeys. So glad you got to enjoy the full Wales experience-one's sense of paddling horizons and perspective can't help but be altered there. Your report bring back great memories and SO makes me want to go back again, and again, and again...
  15. So when did you begin applying the 50/50 rule??? Did moving North prompt that?
  16. Wait-Kate Hartland, since when did the Southern girl who loves to fly down the frozen water begin Winter paddling? 50/50 rule clearly does not qualify as Winter paddling. ?
  17. A friend shared this demo this am on Facebook. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_LLNATL6BdQ
  18. Looks like a lovely weekend! So happy to see so many women NSPN'ers participated!
  19. Great question and thread, with lots of useful especially insights and perspectives. Just returned from 5 days playing in fast moving water. For the first four days, I felt rusty. For a variety of reasons this was this first time this season I had the opportunity to play in current and in conditions. I just didn't feel quite on top of my game and less confident in my abilities. On day 5, a few of us were given the challenge of chasing each other down the current, capturing boats, rescuing each other, swimming our boats to the eddy, and self-rescues. Paradoxically, this relieved the anxiety I was feeling about the conditions and restored my confidence. As soon as I had to focus on assisting my fellow paddlers (the first task) it took my focus off of the environment. So one thing I plan to play around with is the idea of giving someone a specific task to focus on. Note, I am by no means suggesting asking a nervous paddler to throw themselves over in the biggest conditions, etc... On,y this idea of focusing on a task...
  20. Phil and I are planning to join you. Look forward to it.
  21. Agree with the comments above about potential drawbacks. For me, it's all about the tools in the toolbox. If you have a standard roll, why mess around with Pawlata rolls, re-enter and roll, Greenland rolls-or even Cowboy or assisted rescues? Because if one method fail in one situation, you have other options readily available....
