Wednesday Lunch Paddle #14 Odiorne Point, Rye, NH to Rye Harbor, lunch break at Rye Harbor, return to Odiorne. Approximately 12 NM round trip. Conditions - SW wind, 5 kts. or less, calm seas, 1 foot swell at about 9-10 seconds. HT - 11:13am, LT 5:03pm Paddles - Jeff Charette, Liz Burgess, Nancy Hill, Joyce Carpenter, Paul Sylvester, and David Mercer. The weather forecast for Wednesday was hazy, hot, and humid, with the possibility of severe afternoon thunderstorms, hitting the New Hampshire coast anytime after 2pm. With this in mind the group unanimously decided to move our 10am meeting time to a 9am launch time. After a brief discussion the group decided it would be nice to head to Rye Harbor. There had been a suggestion to circumnavigate Gerrish, as the tides were perfect for this trip, however many felt the the heat, humidity, and possibility for biting insects would make the marshes an unpleasant place to be. We launched promptly at 9am with sunny skies and the predicted heat and humidity. Rounding the breakwater leaving Little Harbor we were met with slightly cooler temperatures and a light breeze. The Isles of Shoals barely visible through the distant haze. The mild conditions and rising tide meant there would not be too many opportunities for rock play, however a few in the group did take advantage of the few opportunities that did present. We took a pleasant lunch break at Rye Harbor, followed by a an easy return to Odiorne. Again, there was just a few opportunities for some mild rock play, or surf. All six landed back at Odiorne at approximately 2pm, with the sun still shining and no signs of those severe thunderstorms. It wouldn’t be too much longer for those predicted thunderstorms to come through. On the drive home a few of us ran into these storms. The up side, my boat was washed and clean before I got home. Thanks to all who came out and helped to make this another great NSPN trip. Hope to see you all again soon.

Looks like everyone is in agreement. 9:00 launch it is. The latest weather forecast shows possible t-storms hitting the NH seacoast area anytime after 2pm.

The weather and route determined by the group will determine what time we are off the water, however I think it’s safe to say we should be back at the launch no later than 4:00. The forecast for afternoon t-storms could very well have us off the water much earlier.

Al, I have also seen a few different forecasts in reference to the weather. Let’s monitor the forecast for the next few days. There are a variety of paddles we can do from this launch, so if it looks like storms could move in earlier in the afternoon we can chose a shorter option and try to be back at the launch a bit earlier. The first of the tall ships arrives mid day on Thursday, 8/1. Others will be arriving over the weekend.

NSPN Wednesday Lunch Paddle #14 takes place July 31, 2019. We will meet at Odiorne Point, in Rye, NH, at 10:00am. I believe that there may be a launch fee at Odiorne this season, so please be prepared will a little cash. HT 11:13am, LT 5:03pm. Marine zone forecast, SW winds 5 to 10 kt. Seas 2 to 4 ft. A chance of showers. Air temps predicted to be in the mid 80s, water temps in the high 60s. There is a chance of afternoon thunderstorms, so we will plan accordingly. Let's meet at 10 am sharp, and ready to launch around 10.20 am. Then we'll have a beach briefing, make a plan together based on what people feel like doing, and get on the water, hopefully around 10.30 am. There are several options to paddle from this launch so we will plan as a group based on conditions and skill level. This trip doesn't have a specific level: we'll determine the route based on who shows up, what people want to do, and what the environment wants to do. All properly equipped members are welcome: please bring rigged boats with deck lines, bulkheads, spray skirts, and dress for immersion. NOTE: The Wednesday Lunch Paddles are cooperative adventures, not guided trips. Each participant is responsible for her/his own safety.Don’t assume the trip initiators are smarter, stronger, better at rough water, more attractive, or more skilled paddlers than you are. It really was a fantastic day. Thanks to Joe for organizing, and thanks to Bob and Jim for contributing to a great outing. Andy, you're right about the true size of the waves being diminished in the pictures. With the exception of some occasion wind chop, it was mostly 4 -5 footers at 11 seconds. Lots of fun in deep water, but packing a big punch when the wave starts to break. Jeff

Regretfully I won’t be able to make it this Wednesday, due to a prior commitment, however I do look forward to joining you on many of these trips throughout the season.

Hi Tom, I also work weekends, therefore any opportunities I have to paddle are always weekdays. While I do plan to join many of the Wednesday paddles that will be starting in May, I will also be planning and posting other weekday trips. I’m always looking for others to join me and I look forward to paddling with you. Jeff
